What word counts are reported?
Two secondary sources offer useful estimates, but neither establishes a definitive count for all editions:

Project Gutenberg hosts an identifiable English-language text of the novel, but its catalog record does not state a word count. The record lets a reader identify a specific text to count; it does not certify either estimate above. Project Gutenberg’s ebook record for War and Peace links to that text.
Why does the total vary?
English translations use different wording
A translated novel does not have one invariant English word count. Translators make different choices about phrasing, and those choices affect the total. The reported figures do not come from a documented, apples-to-apples count across translations.

Different files include different material
Digital counts can change according to whether they include introductions, notes, headings, and other front matter, as well as how they treat hyphenated words and similar cases. These are methodological reasons totals may differ, not a measured breakdown of the gap between the two estimates.
How to get a reproducible count
For a count another reader can check, define the text and the counting rules rather than relying on a bare number:

- Identify the exact edition or digital file, including its translator where applicable. Project Gutenberg’s record identifies one English-language text, but does not give its total.
- Specify whether the count covers only the novel or also notes, introductions, headings, and other front matter.
- State how the counting method handles hyphenated forms and any French passages, especially if the edition presents them differently.
- Report the resulting total as a count of that file under those rules, not as the universal word count of War and Peace.
Word count is not page count
Page totals are not a reliable substitute for word totals. Trim size, type size, font, typesetting, and front matter all affect how many pages a particular edition has. Without a named edition and its specifications, a page figure cannot be compared meaningfully with a word-count estimate.

What to check when comparing editions
- Translator and translation date: English wording and length can differ.
- Completeness: Confirm whether the edition is complete or abridged.
- Counting scope: Check whether notes and introductory material are included in a quoted total.
- Language presentation: Editions may handle French passages differently.
- Physical format: For reading comfort, compare page size, type size, binding, and page layout—not just a page total.
