That is not a complete count of every song she has written: the Hall of Fame says its figure excludes additional music, songs written for other artists, and vault songs released through re-recordings.
What does the 187-song figure count?
The Songwriters Hall of Fame’s profile counts songs on Swift’s 12 studio albums. It is a useful, clearly defined benchmark, but it is not a deduplicated lifetime register of every composition credited to her. The Hall of Fame profile explicitly excludes additional music, songs she has written for others, and vault releases associated with her re-recordings.
So, if the question means “How many songs are on her studio albums?”, the cited answer is 187. If it means “How many distinct compositions has she ever received a songwriting credit for?”, the available sources do not establish a definitive total.
Why isn’t there one all-in total?
A broader count depends on what qualifies and how titles are counted. Swift’s songwriting credits can include songs she wrote alone and songs she co-wrote; a credit does not by itself mean sole authorship. The catalog can also extend beyond studio-album tracks to standalone and soundtrack songs, songs recorded by other artists, and unreleased or demo works. Published song lists include such varied material, but they do not provide a definitive, authoritative total under consistent inclusion rules. A published catalog list illustrates the range of titles without resolving that counting question.

What to count when comparing totals
Different totals are meaningful only when they use the same rules. A count of studio-album tracks is not directly comparable to a count of all released songs or every composition with a songwriting credit.
- Album tracks or all releases: A studio-album count excludes material released elsewhere unless its rules say otherwise.
- Solo writing or any songwriting credit: Co-written songs count toward a total of credited compositions, but should not be presented as songs Swift wrote alone.
- Released or unreleased material: A catalog may include demos or vault songs as well as officially released tracks.
- Distinct compositions or versions: Re-recordings and alternate versions should not automatically be counted as separate songs.
- Songs recorded by other artists: These broaden the count beyond Swift’s own albums and releases.
What the number says about Swift’s songwriting
The 187 figure describes the scope of her studio-album catalog, not how many songs she wrote without collaborators. Swift has discussed collaboration as part of her process. In a 2014 TIME interview, she said she felt free to collaborate with whoever she wanted, adding that listeners could recognize the same person’s lyrics in the music. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum also presents her as a songwriter in its educational biography.
