Martin Scorsese has won one competitive Oscar: Best Director for The Departed at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007. His later nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon did not add to that total.
Scorsese’s Oscar win
Scorsese’s sole Academy Award win was for directing The Departed. The Associated Press described him as a one-time Oscar winner in 2024, and the Academy Awards Database is the official record of his win and nominations. The Academy’s 79th Awards records place the win in 2007.
Why his 2024 nomination does not change the total
At the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, Scorsese was nominated for Best Director for Killers of the Flower Moon. Christopher Nolan won that category for Oppenheimer, so Scorsese’s nomination was not another Oscar win. The Academy’s 2024 ceremony page lists the nominees and winner.
What counts as Scorsese’s Oscar total
The total here means competitive Academy Awards credited to Scorsese personally—not Oscars won by the actors, writers, or other collaborators on his films. The Academy Awards Database says its historical record is complete through the 98th Academy Awards, presented March 15, 2026. The database is the primary source for checking the official record.
