Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA two-hour movie can be many different sizes; there is no fixed GB value. For a quick estimate, multiply the file’s average total bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps) by 0.9 to get approximate decimal gigabytes (GB). That puts a file averaging 5 Mbps at about 4.5 GB, for example. The estimate changes with the encoding, audio and other tracks, and the movie itself.
Estimate a two-hour movie’s file size
For a 7,200-second movie, each 1 Mbps of average total bitrate represents about 0.9 decimal GB. “Total” matters: if the bitrate you have is for video alone, include audio separately.
| Average total bitrate | Approximate size for two hours |
|---|---|
| 2 Mbps | 1.8 GB |
| 5 Mbps | 4.5 GB |
| 10 Mbps | 9 GB |
| 20 Mbps | 18 GB |
These are calculations, not standard sizes for movies at particular resolutions. Variable bitrate means the data rate changes during playback, so an average bitrate gives a more useful estimate than a peak or momentary rate.
Calculate the size from bitrate
- Take the movie’s average total bitrate in Mbps and multiply it by 7,200 seconds.
- Divide by 8 to convert bits to bytes.
- Divide by 1,000,000,000 to express the result in decimal GB.
In compact form: size in decimal GB ≈ average total bitrate in Mbps × 0.9. For example, 10 Mbps × 0.9 gives an estimate of 9 GB.

If you know only the video bitrate, add the audio bitrate before using the formula. Subtitles, additional audio tracks, and container data can also add to the final file size.
Why two-hour movie sizes vary
Resolution alone does not determine file size. Apple’s HLS authoring guidance notes that bitrate depends on factors including codec, resolution, frame rate, content complexity, and desired quality. The IETF’s RFC 9317 also identifies color depth, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion as relevant variables.

- Codec and encoder: Different compression methods and encoding choices can produce different sizes at comparable quality.
- Frame rate and image characteristics: More frames, higher color depth or HDR, and complex or fast-moving scenes can affect the bitrate needed.
- Quality target: A higher target bitrate generally means more data, but the relationship is not a universal size rule.
- Tracks included: Video-only bitrate omits audio; a file with multiple tracks or subtitles may contain additional data.
Apple bitrate examples—and what they do not tell you
Apple’s HLS guidance lists these example video encoding targets. Applying the two-hour formula gives the corresponding video-only estimates below; audio not included in the listed bitrate and container overhead would add to the file size.
| Apple example target | Video bitrate | Estimated video data for two hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p H.264 | 6 Mbps | About 5.4 GB |
| 1080p HEVC | 4.5 Mbps | About 4.05 GB |
| 4K HEVC | 11.6 Mbps | About 10.44 GB |
These are Apple’s example targets, not measured sizes for commercial movie downloads or universal recommendations. Apple describes them as initial targets to evaluate against the content and workflow.

Streaming speed is not download size
Netflix recommends a stable internet connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p playback, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. Those figures describe recommended connection speeds, not the average bitrate or file size of a downloaded movie. Streaming rates can change, and a service may select delivery formats dynamically. See Netflix’s internet connection recommendations.
Similarly, YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations list 35–45 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 2160p (4K) uploads. That is guidance for uploaded source encodes, not a benchmark for streaming or downloaded movie sizes.

When using a bitrate figure, check whether it describes the video track or the whole file. Apple’s AVFoundation reference defines averageVideoBitrate as the average bitrate of the video track, or of combined content when the track is muxed.
