At the end of House of the Dragon season 2, Team Black has seven combat-age dragon-and-rider pairs. That count excludes the young dragon Tyraxes, bonded to Joffrey Velaryon, because neither is ready to fight in the season 2 snapshot. The roster changes in later season 3 developments, so this is a season 2 finale-era answer—not an unqualified count of the show’s current dragons.
Team Black’s seven combat-age dragon riders
The season 2 finale-era count includes dragons with combat-age riders aligned with Team Black. The pairings are:

Why some counts include more dragons
Young dragons are not combat-age pairs
Joffrey Velaryon is bonded to Tyraxes, but the dragon and rider are too young to fight in the season 2 account. A count of all bonded dragons can therefore be higher than the seven-pair combat count. Stormcloud is also mentioned among the younger dragons in season 2-era coverage. Whether either is included depends on the story point and whether the count includes dragons that are not ready for battle.

Riderless dragons and past bonds change the total
Vermithor and Silverwing were previously riderless before Hugh Hammer and Ulf White claimed them. Seasmoke was formerly ridden by Laenor before Addam claimed him. A count that includes unclaimed dragons or historical rider associations is answering a different question from “How many combat-age pairs does Team Black have?”
TIME’s season 2-era faction account gives a total that does not match the dragons enumerated in its own list, so that total should not be treated as a settled roster count. For the season 2 finale-era answer, the clearly defined figure is seven combat-age pairs; broader totals need an explicit rule for young, riderless, and historically associated dragons. TIME’s discussion of Targaryen blood and dragonriding illustrates why the counting scope matters.

The count changes after season 2
Later season 3 coverage reports developments that change the roster, including the deaths of Meleys, Arrax, and Vermax and changes to some rider associations. That means “seven” should be tied to the season 2 finale-era snapshot rather than presented as the count for every later episode. The later guide is a secondary account, not an official HBO roster. HBO’s official dragon index confirms spellings for many dragons, but it is not a complete rider guide and does not establish faction allegiance or current survival status.
