A chorus in pop songwriting is often 8, 12, or 16 bars, but there is no required length. Count the bars in the passage that functions as the chorus in that particular song: typically the section built around its main hook or central idea. A pre-chorus, post-chorus, or instrumental drop may sit beside it without being part of the chorus.
What is the usual length of a chorus?
Eight, 12, and 16 bars are all familiar chorus lengths. BMI’s songwriting guidance describes choruses as tending to use these counts, rather than setting a rule that every chorus must follow. Eight and 16 bars are common expectations in many pop-writing contexts; 12 bars is also an established choice.
Those counts are useful starting points when arranging a song, not a test of whether a section is a chorus. The chorus’s role and boundaries matter more than matching a conventional number.
Why can a chorus have a different number of bars?
Chorus length varies with the song’s phrasing and arrangement, and the boundary between sections is not always obvious. The University of Puget Sound’s instructional analysis labels choruses of several different lengths:

The examples show that a song can vary its chorus length, including at the end, without the section ceasing to function as a chorus. They also show why “choruses are always a multiple of four” is not a reliable rule.
How do you count the bars in a chorus?
- Find the likely chorus. Listen for the repeated or emphasized hook, or the passage that states the song’s central idea. Verses more often develop details; a chorus tends to foreground the main idea.
- Mark its boundaries. Decide where that passage begins and ends. If the arrangement has a pickup, count it according to the score or the way the arrangement is being measured, and apply that approach consistently.
- Count the measures between those boundaries. A bar, also called a measure, is a unit organized by the meter and indicated by bar lines in written music. In a recording, follow the musical measures rather than counting individual beats as bars.
- Separate adjacent sections when needed. Decide whether a lead-in, extra hook, instrumental passage, or ending extension belongs to the chorus or is its own section before giving a count.
Section labels involve judgment as well as listening. The University of Puget Sound text notes that analysts may disagree about whether a passage is a pre-chorus, the first chorus, or a “verse part b.” If the boundary is debatable, explain what passage you counted rather than presenting the number as an uncontested fact.

How do pre-choruses, post-choruses, and drops affect the count?
A pre-chorus is a connecting lift immediately before the chorus. A post-chorus is an added hook after it. Both can be part of a larger verse-chorus arrangement, but they do not automatically belong in the chorus bar count. Decide whether each passage is musically distinct, then count the chorus on its own.
In EDM, a lyrical chorus may lead into an instrumental or mostly instrumental drop that serves as the song’s high point. The drop may be central to the arrangement, but it is not automatically the chorus. Count it separately if it follows the sung hook as a distinct section.

How long should you make a chorus when writing a song?
Start with 8, 12, or 16 bars if one of those lengths gives the hook room to land and the arrangement feels natural. Then adjust to fit the lyric, melody, and musical phrase. A shorter or longer section can work; the cited guidance describes conventions, not mandatory formulas.
There is no universal statistical average established by the cited sources. Historical chart analysis reported by BMI found that songs beginning with the chorus accounted for 25% in Q1 2015, rose to 42% in Q2 2015, and stayed close to that share in Q3 2015. Those figures, attributed to David Penn of Hit Songs Deconstructed, describe those 2015 quarters only; they are not a current prevalence estimate or evidence for a particular chorus length.
