Clint Eastwood has won four competitive Academy Awards: Best Director and Best Picture as a producer for Unforgiven, and the same two awards for Million Dollar Baby. He also received the Academy’s separate Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, an honorary recognition rather than a competitive Oscar.
Eastwood’s four competitive Oscar wins
Eastwood’s four wins came from two films. For each, he won Best Director, and he shared the Best Picture award as a credited producer.

| Film | Film year | Ceremony | Eastwood’s wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unforgiven | 1992 | 65th Academy Awards, 1993 | Best Director; Best Picture as producer |
| Million Dollar Baby | 2004 | 2005 Academy Awards | Best Director; Best Picture as producer |
The Academy’s 87th Annual Academy Awards fact sheet summarizes the wins as Best Picture and Directing for Unforgiven in 1992 and Million Dollar Baby in 2004. Those years refer to the films, not the ceremonies: the 1992 release Unforgiven was honored in 1993, and the 2004 film Million Dollar Baby in 2005.
Why some counts include another Academy award
The Academy also presented Eastwood with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. It is an honorary Academy recognition, separate from the four competitive wins above. A higher total may be counting that award alongside his competitive Oscars.

A nomination is not a win
Eastwood was nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for Unforgiven, but did not win that category. The film’s awards for other recipients do not add to Eastwood’s personal total.
