What started as Kaul asking Shukla about writing grew into a quiet, partial portrait of the writer’s ideas and daily life.
What is Chaar Phool Hain Aur Duniya Hai about?
Directed by Achal Mishra, the documentary centers on Vinod Kumar Shukla in his Raipur home. Its conversation touches on creative practice, rootedness, writing, and what happens when literature is adapted for cinema. Rather than presenting a full life story, the film offers a glimpse of Shukla’s thinking through conversation and observation.
The title comes from one of Shukla’s poems. As reported by Scroll in October 2024, the 54-minute film also includes an interview with Shukla’s son, Shashwat Gopal, and footage of ordinary moments such as Shukla eating and walking on the terrace.
How did Manav Kaul and Achal Mishra’s film begin?
The project took shape during a 2022 visit to Shukla. Kaul had said he planned to meet the writer; Mishra, who was talking with Kaul about Shukla, asked to come along. He brought filming and sound equipment, while Kaul led the conversation.

The first visit focused on Shukla’s creative process and philosophy. Mishra later returned to record more of the writer’s routine and to speak with his son. The filming took place over two afternoons in 2022. Mishra continued revisiting the footage and editing it afterward; Scroll reported that the film was completed in April 2024.
Mishra has said he did not want the documentary to become primarily a film about Kaul. Kaul’s role is central to the encounter that sets the film in motion, but the focus remains on Shukla.
What does the film say about Shukla’s writing and film adaptations?
The conversation considers the quality of Shukla’s writing and the challenge of translating literature to the screen. Mishra described the writing to Scroll as having “an innocence, an almost child-like purity” that “doesn’t seem calculated.” He also observed: “The craft looks so easy even though it isn’t – there is a play of words, the writing is a way of seeing the craft being balanced with the expression.” Both remarks are Mishra’s, not Shukla’s.
The discussion of adaptation has a specific point of reference: Mani Kaul’s earlier film of Shukla’s novel Naukar Ki Kameez. The documentary raises the question of how writers might respond when their books become films; the novel is a useful companion for readers interested in the literary work behind that subject.

What the documentary does—and does not—cover
The film’s approach is intimate and observational, not comprehensive. It places Shukla’s reflections alongside small scenes from his home life, but it should not be treated as a complete biography or account of every public issue connected to him. Scroll’s 2024 report specifically noted that the documentary does not address contemporary royalty allegations involving Shukla and publishers.

Scroll reported in October 2024 that the film was scheduled to premiere at the Dharamshala International Film Festival, held November 7–10, 2024. That is a historical festival listing, not a statement about current screenings.
A 2025 Hindustan Times interview reported a MUBI release, but that dated report does not establish whether the film is currently available there in 2026 or in any particular country. Check the service’s current catalog in your territory or the film’s official channels for present-day access.
