Performer Makoto Koji made up many of Hornet’s short, expressive gibberish vocalizations, choosing sounds that felt instinctive for the scene. The written dialogue carries the longer verbal content; the voice adds another layer of personality and emotion.
How did Makoto Koji create Hornet’s voice?
Koji said she invented many of Hornet’s brief vocal sounds herself: “I did a lot of making up my own gibberish.” Rather than working from a fully defined language or a fixed translation for each sound, she looked for something that felt natural and “instinctual” in the moment.
That approach let a short utterance signal a scene’s mood or purpose without voicing the full written exchange. The gibberish is not established as a consistent language with a formal vocabulary; it is part of the performance, alongside the words players read.
What does “gek tuu” mean?
Koji described “gek tuu” as a sound for a moment when Hornet is urging the character to act. The direction she received was: “It’s a moment where Hornet is telling the character, ‘Now is the moment. Do it now.’ That was the only direction I got.”

Players jokingly heard “git gud” in the sound. That is a fan interpretation, not the intended meaning Koji gave for the scene.
What kind of character did Koji hear in Hornet?
Koji described Hornet as confident, stoic, and sure of herself, but also goofy. Those qualities are not mutually exclusive: the brief sounds could serve a forceful or serious beat while still leaving room for playfulness. Koji saw Hornet as multifaceted rather than defined by a single vocal trait.

How did an animator become Hornet’s performer?
Koji was an animator, not a trained voice actor. Her connection to Team Cherry put her close to the project, and she stepped into the role when the person initially expected to perform Hornet planned to move overseas. Her account presents the vocal work as a creative opportunity that grew from that proximity, not a conventional casting route.
Why does Hornet’s voice use short sounds instead of spoken dialogue?
Team Cherry’s June 25, 2019 development update established the design premise: “Hornet has a voice! Though she isn’t the type to speak at length, Hornet’s not afraid to engage in conversation where necessary.” The post also noted that making the protagonist speak at length increased the writing demands. That is useful context for the approach, though it is an early development update rather than a detailed description of every final-game exchange.

Short vocalizations and written dialogue do different jobs in the presentation. The written text can convey the full exchange; Koji’s voice gives a beat its sound, timing, and emotional inflection. The two are layers of the same scene, not competing ways to tell it.

Koji placed the performance within a larger process of character creation: “There is so much work involved to bring a character to life, from an initial sketch, to drawing each frame, to implementing the behaviours and weaving all the narrative strands,” she said. She described voice and sound as “only the final icing on the cake.”

That perspective helps explain why the gibberish need not carry a complete, independently translatable script. Its effect depends on the character already taking shape through design, animation, behavior, and narrative; the voice adds a compact, human-feeling response to that work.
