Makeup began as a side interest for Yong-chin Breslin, not a career plan. While studying fashion design at Kingston, she painted and illustrated in her free time; people she knew then booked her for face-painting and Halloween jobs. After graduating, she began working as a makeup artist professionally. Her later route to Glow Up involved a near miss, a second application and, she says, the judges’ critiques helping her develop skills she had taught herself.
Painting and illustration led to early makeup jobs
In an interview published October 19, 2022, Breslin described fashion design as her focus while she studied at Kingston. Makeup was something she did for fun and as a favor. Because she was already painting and illustrating, acquaintances asked her to do face painting and Halloween makeup.
“After my degree, I started to do make-up properly,” she told Professional Beauty. She said her first year working in makeup was unpaid and intensive, and that she had started doing it professionally just under two years before the interview. Those are her retrospective descriptions, not a precise start date.
How she reached Glow Up
Breslin loved reality and talent shows. During lockdown, she watched the first two seasons of Glow Up and applied for the third. She reached the final 15 applicants but did not make the cast. Production later contacted her about applying for season four; she submitted on the final day and went on to win.

What the show added to her self-taught skills
Before appearing on the show, Breslin says she had taught herself makeup and had not used prosthetics, applied them, or worked with bald caps. She credited the judges, Val Garland and Dom Skinner, with helping her advance: the broadcast included only a snippet of the more in-depth critiques, she said.
The experience was not a steady climb in confidence. Breslin recalled that being in the bottom two in weeks three and four challenged her belief in herself. After winning, she initially felt she did not deserve the result because she was unhappy with her final creative brief. She said that feeling changed after filming, when she began to believe she had earned the win.

Her advice to aspiring makeup artists
Breslin’s advice is practical rather than a promise of a particular outcome: practice, learn from tutorials, choose a makeup style to study, and contact people in the industry. She emphasized reaching out rather than waiting to be discovered, noting that the field is saturated and people cannot know your work if you do not introduce yourself.

- For a graphic flick: Start on the side that feels less familiar, keep your eyes open and look straight ahead while applying liner so you can compare the two sides.
- For smudged liner: Draw the shape with black gel liner, blend in small circles with a small fluffy brush, then set it with eyeshadow. Controlled blending helps retain the shape.
- For a three-line look: Experiment with liner around the crease. The feature suggests eye primer as a smoother base that can help prevent smudging.
- For blue or other bright shades: Soften the color with a rounded edge and experiment with warm and cool tones.
- For a pink wash: Buff the edges with a fluffy brush and layer cream and powder products to set the color.
The Space NK article named specific liners as examples, but it does not establish that Breslin exclusively used or currently endorses them.

When Professional Beauty interviewed her in October 2022, Breslin said she was working more with musicians on album covers and videos. She also discussed hopes for a YouTube channel about looks from the show and classic or editorial makeup, as well as masterclasses and teaching. These were plans and career details reported at that time; they do not establish her current schedule or projects.
