In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, his version is presented as more restrained and recognizably human, with greater emphasis on the character’s history with Albus Dumbledore. That contrast is an interpretation of the performances, not a measurable fact or a claim that Grindelwald becomes morally justified.
Why Mads Mikkelsen took over the role
Mikkelsen played Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film, The Secrets of Dumbledore. The official Wizarding World announcement named him for the part; contemporary coverage identified him as Johnny Depp’s replacement.

The film does not explain the recasting within its story. The change is a production matter, so the useful comparison is between the actors’ interpretations rather than an imagined plot explanation for Grindelwald’s changed appearance.
How Mikkelsen approached Grindelwald
Mikkelsen said he did not want to copy Depp’s performance. In an interview reported by GameSpot, he called doing so “creative suicide,” but added that the new portrayal needed “to build some sort of bridge between what came before.” His aim was a fresh performance within an established character, not a narrative reset.

GameSpot also reported that director David Yates encouraged Mikkelsen to explore a version suited to his strengths. Mikkelsen described the character and story as already developed in Yates’s mind, saying, “The story was there and the character well developed in David Yates’ mind.”
What feels different in Mikkelsen’s performance
A more restrained presence
British GQ’s feature contrasts Depp’s more theatrical visual and performance style with what it sees as Mikkelsen’s steadier, more restrained approach. This is the magazine’s reading of the performances, not an objective ranking. Rather than leaning as heavily on flamboyance, Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald can feel controlled and deliberate.
More visible humanity and empathy
GQ characterizes Mikkelsen’s portrayal as more human, respectable, and empathetic, while retaining the intellectual vanity associated with Depp’s version. That emphasis can make Grindelwald’s emotional history with Dumbledore easier to perceive, without making his pursuit of power less dangerous.
A bridge, not a copy
The continuity is in the character and the story, not in matching every acting choice. Mikkelsen’s comments make the balance explicit: he wanted to avoid imitation while connecting his interpretation to what audiences had already seen.

The official film synopsis frames Grindelwald as seeking control of the wizarding world and Dumbledore as trying to stop him. In the OutNow cast interview, Mikkelsen described the pair as having similar goals but very different methods, saying, “while their goals are similar, their methods are entirely different.” He also spoke of Grindelwald carrying burdens and hardships.
That relationship gives the performance room for complexity. Mikkelsen’s portrayal can register intimacy and shared history alongside ambition and conflict; empathy toward the character is not the same as excusing his actions.
