The Day the Earth Blew Up made the leap from short-form cartoon comedy to a wide U.S. theatrical release by giving Porky Pig and Daffy Duck a science-fiction adventure with an emotional center. Director Peter Browngardt paired their chaotic humor with a story about friendship and unlikely heroes, while using the feature’s widescreen frame—and a brief 4:3 passage—to connect it to classic cartoons.
From short-form gags to a theatrical story
Looney Tunes characters are built to thrive in fast, self-contained comic situations. A feature, Browngardt argued, needed more than an extended string of those bits. In an October 28, 2024 interview with Animation Scoop, he said: “it couldn’t just have 90 minutes of just jokes and gags. It had to have an emotional story. It had to have an emotional core.”
He chose Porky and Daffy because their pairing offered a relationship to develop as well as a source of comedy. Browngardt noted that in their early buddy appearances, they were not generally trying to kill or eat one another. The film uses that distinction to explore the ups and downs of living together and being best friends, without asking the characters to stop being funny.
The plot gives that friendship a feature-sized problem: when activity at a local bubble-gum factory exposes an alien mind-control scheme, the unlikely duo must confront an invasion. The official film site presents the movie as an animated science-fiction adventure, while its later streaming announcement likewise describes Porky and Daffy facing an alien threat.

- The Day the Earth Blew Up - A Looney Tunes Movie [DVD]
A classic-cartoon look inside a science-fiction frame
Browngardt used the screen shape itself to bridge the movie’s two traditions. He said the film is in CinemaScope because, in his view, “All classic, great sci-fi films” use that widescreen format. The movie then shifts to 4:3 for an embedded short, a deliberate nod to classic cartoons. In the same interview, he cited Who Framed Roger Rabbit as an influence on the approach.
That change in aspect ratio makes the homage visible rather than merely referential: the feature can occupy an expansive science-fiction canvas, then briefly evoke the narrower frame associated with the shorts. Cast member Eric Bauza, who voices both Porky and Daffy, described the production as hand-drawn 2D animation in a March 4, 2025 Animation Scoop cast interview.
How the film was written and who brought it to life
Browngardt described the movie’s setup as origin-flavored, but not an attempt to redefine Looney Tunes history. In his account, the characters are flexible performers who can take on different jobs and situations. That is a description of this film’s creative approach, not a declaration that it establishes new franchise canon.
The writing also developed through storyboarding. Browngardt said Kevin Costello’s first-draft script gave the team a structure, after which sequences were explored and rewritten through boards and visual ideas. He explained that Warner Bros. allowed board artists to receive writing credit on this production.

Why the release dates differ
The film’s release history has several dates because they describe different markets and release contexts—not one conflicting premiere date. The Numbers records an Oscar-qualifying U.S. run beginning December 13, 2024, while Ketchup Entertainment’s official site announced the wide U.S. theatrical release beginning March 14, 2025. The database also records earlier international releases, including Germany on August 1, 2024, and limited releases in Italy, Czechia and Slovakia in November 2024.

Reception: two platform scores, not a universal verdict
At access in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 86% Tomatometer score from 122 reviews and an 88% Popcornmeter score from more than 500 verified ratings. The platform’s critics consensus praised the movie’s energy and inventive gags; its audience summary highlighted the chaotic Porky-and-Daffy adventure and old-school animation. Both scores are dynamic aggregates, not a representative survey of all viewers.
