Its subversion lies less in abandoning the crime-thriller setup than in changing what kind of story that setup becomes.
Is Longlegs a serial-killer movie or supernatural horror?
It is both: the case gives the film its investigative framework, while occult clues pull it away from a conventional procedural. NEON’s official synopsis describes an FBI agent pursuing a serial killer and uncovering occult clues, and credits Osgood Perkins as writer and director. The listed cast includes Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt. NEON’s film page

That combination is why a simple either-or label misses the point. The crime investigation is real, but it does not remain the film’s only logic. NEON quotes Perkins describing it as “a horror movie mixtape”—a useful indication of genre play, not proof that every viewer will experience the shifts the same way. NEON’s film page
How does Longlegs subvert serial-killer movie expectations?
It starts with recognizable investigative ingredients
In the spoiler-light account published by Cheryl Eddy at Gizmodo/io9 in June 2024, Lee Harker is a new FBI agent in 1990s Oregon assigned to a case involving family murder-suicides and coded letters signed “Longlegs.” Lee’s unusually fine-tuned intuition helps draw her into an investigation that initially resembles the pursuit of an elusive killer. Then the case changes direction
Rather than staying focused on evidence-solving in the familiar procedural mode, the story moves toward occult clues and supernatural possibilities. Eddy contrasts that shift with a more “by-the-numbers serial killer tale,” while also noting the film’s echoes of familiar genre conventions. That is a critic’s reading of the film, not a formal genre classification or a claim about audience consensus. Gizmodo/io9’s review
The escalation may divide viewers
The review describes a careful build of dread followed by a third-act escalation that some viewers may find excessive. That tension is part of the film’s gamble: the increasingly strange turn can feel like a bold break from the expected crime thriller, or like too much piling on, depending on the viewer. The available critical account supports that range of response, not a consensus verdict. Gizmodo/io9’s review

What to expect without spoilers
Expect an FBI case, cryptic communications, and a story whose explanations and atmosphere move beyond ordinary investigative procedure. The premise does not mean the film discards every serial-killer convention; rather, it uses those conventions to set up a shift in tone and genre. Keeping that distinction in mind is the clearest way to approach the film without spoiling its later developments.
How successful is the genre shift?
The answer depends on what you want from a serial-killer story. If you value procedural deduction and a steady focus on evidence, the turn toward occult horror may be less satisfying. If you are open to a crime investigation becoming stranger and more supernatural, the shift is the film’s central appeal. The June 2024 Gizmodo/io9 review is a useful guide to both the carefully built dread and the possibility that the final escalation will feel overdone, but it cannot stand in for every viewer’s reaction.
