How Kanopy Access Works: Library Cards, Tickets, and Viewing Limits

Kanopy public-library access requires a participating library card and its PIN or password. Libraries set ticket allowances; tickets reset monthly, while some titles cost nothing to watch.

To use Kanopy through a public library, find your participating library, sign in with your library card number and PIN or password, and create a Kanopy account. Your library determines your monthly ticket allowance; tickets reset on the first day of each month and unused tickets do not roll over. Some titles—including Kanopy Kids videos—use no tickets. University access follows a separate, institution-specific sign-in process.

Kanopy calls its viewing currency tickets, not credits. The ticket cost and viewing period can vary by title, so check the title page before you start watching.

Which kind of Kanopy access do you have?

Kanopy access is arranged through an institution rather than through one universal account plan. Most users will follow one of two paths: a public library or a university. The sign-in steps, account requirements, and limits differ, so identify your institution type before troubleshooting a problem or looking for a ticket count.

Access path What you use to sign in Kanopy account How limits are determined
Public library Library card number and the PIN or password managed by the library Required when setting up public-library access The library sets the ticket arrangement. Title costs and viewing periods vary.
University The university’s sign-in flow, which varies by institution Not required to watch; optional for features such as a watchlist and Continue Watching The institution determines availability. The public-library monthly ticket rules should not be assumed to apply.

Kanopy documents these as distinct access paths: public-library setup and academic-user setup. If you are unsure which arrangement applies, ask the library or university that provides your access.

Set up public-library access

You need a participating library and both parts of your library credentials: the card number and the PIN or password associated with it. A library card by itself is not enough to complete setup. Kanopy’s instructions for public-library users are available in its getting-started guide.

  1. Open Kanopy. Use the Kanopy website or mobile app and choose Get started.
  2. Find your library. Search for the public library and select the correct institution from the results.
  3. Enter your credentials. Provide your library card number and the PIN or password the library uses for your account.
  4. Finish creating your Kanopy account. Public-library setup includes confirming that you are at least 18 and accepting Kanopy’s terms.

If your library does not appear in the search results, Kanopy says it may not offer the service. Check directly with the library about participation; a Kanopy search result is not a substitute for the library confirming its current service arrangement.

Adding another library

If you belong to more than one participating library, Kanopy allows you to add another library to the same account. The service permits one card per library. Treat each library as its own access arrangement: its participation and ticket allocation are set at the institution level, rather than combining into one shared monthly allowance. Kanopy explains the process in Adding or removing a library.

Reactivating an existing library

If a previously added library needs reactivation, Kanopy requires the library card number and its PIN or password. The service’s reactivation steps are in its library reactivation guide. If the credentials are rejected, use the library’s help channels to verify them rather than guessing a default PIN; the library sets and manages that credential.

How public-library tickets and viewing periods work

For public-library access, the library provides a monthly number of tickets. Kanopy’s help page does not establish one ticket count that applies to every library. The library’s arrangement and the title’s ticket cost both matter, so a number reported by another patron may not describe your account or a particular film.

Kanopy states: “Tickets reset on the first day of the month, and unused tickets don’t roll over to the next month.” This monthly reset rule appears in Kanopy’s Using tickets help page, updated June 9, 2026. Unused tickets expire at the reset instead of accumulating for a later month.

Check a title before pressing play

The title page shows the number of tickets needed and how long you have to watch after starting. Check both details before you begin: the ticket charge tells you what the selection uses from your available allowance, while the viewing period tells you the time window for watching it. Neither value is universal across the catalog.

For a series, Kanopy may show a ticket charge per episode along with an access period for a season. Read the information shown for that series rather than assuming that one ticket charge covers every episode or that all seasons use the same terms. The service’s ticket guide describes the title-level cost and viewing period.

Because ticket allowances and viewing costs depend on the library and the selected title, there is no reliable single calculation for how many films a given monthly allowance will cover. Use the account’s displayed ticket information and each title’s listing to make a choice. If you want to avoid using tickets, look for titles marked unlimited or filter for zero-ticket selections.

Find films that do not use tickets

Some Kanopy titles are marked for unlimited viewing and cost zero tickets. Kanopy says there is no limit on how many unlimited-viewing titles you can watch or how many times you can watch them. Kanopy Kids videos are also unlimited viewing. These titles are a useful option when you want to watch without spending tickets from a public-library allowance.

To find them, browse Kanopy’s unlimited-viewing shelves or use the search filter labeled 0 tickets. Check the title listing to confirm its status. Kanopy’s Watching unlimited viewing titles page explains the no-ticket category.

Why Kanopy may say access is limited

A notice such as “streaming is currently limited” is different from an error saying your library card or PIN is invalid. Kanopy says a library may temporarily limit access to manage its budget. This is a service-level restriction from the institution, not necessarily a problem with the credentials you entered. The message and available options are described in Streaming access is currently limited, updated July 27, 2026.

When a library has limited service, you may still be able to finish titles you already started if their viewing time remains, and to watch titles that do not require tickets. Availability depends on what remains accessible in your account. Kanopy advises patrons to check back for restored access and to contact the library with feedback.

For academic users, a restriction can mean some titles are unavailable under the university’s arrangement. Contact the university administrator for academic access questions; public-library ticket guidance does not explain a university’s title availability.

Troubleshoot a card, PIN, or password error

If Kanopy reports an error while you add or reactivate a library card, first check that both the card number and PIN or password were entered correctly. A repeated failure is a reason to contact the library, not to try a guessed default PIN. Library credential practices vary, and the library—not Kanopy—sets and manages the PIN or password.

  • The library cannot be found: Ask whether it participates in Kanopy. If it does not appear in Kanopy’s search, the service may not be offered by that library.
  • The card details are rejected: Re-enter the number and PIN or password carefully. If the error continues, ask the library to verify or resolve the credentials. See Kanopy’s PIN or password guidance and card error help, the latter updated September 28, 2026.
  • You see an access-limited message rather than a credential error: The library may have temporarily restricted streaming. Follow the access-limit guidance above and ask the library about its current service status.
  • You use a university login: Follow your university’s prompts and contact its administrator if access or a title is unavailable.

Keeping those situations separate helps direct the problem to the organization that can fix it: the library for card credentials and public-library service, or the university for academic sign-in and availability.

University access and optional Kanopy accounts

Academic users select their university and follow the institution-specific sign-in prompts. The process can differ from one institution to another. Kanopy says a university user does not need to create a Kanopy account to watch. Creating an optional account can add features including Continue Watching, a Watchlist, custom playlists, mobile and TV apps, and the ability to add libraries.

Do not assume that a university login gives you a public-library ticket allowance, or that public-library ticket rules govern academic access. The university determines the access arrangement. Kanopy’s academic-user guide, updated July 2, 2026, outlines this separate path.

Age requirement

Kanopy says its service is intended for people aged 18 or older. A person under 18 may create and use an account only with permission from a parent or legal guardian. This is a separate requirement from having an eligible library card or university sign-in. See Kanopy’s age requirement, updated September 28, 2026.

What to check before watching

  • For a public-library account, confirm that the library participates and that you have both the card number and library-managed PIN or password.
  • Look at the title page for its ticket cost and viewing window; for a series, check whether tickets are charged per episode.
  • Check for unlimited viewing or the 0 tickets filter if you want a selection that does not use tickets.
  • Remember that public-library tickets reset on the first of the month and unused tickets do not carry forward.
  • If service is limited, distinguish that notice from a rejected card credential and contact the institution responsible for the affected access path.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Kanopy tickets do I get each month?

There is no single monthly number that applies to every public library. Your library sets the ticket arrangement, and Kanopy displays the ticket cost on each title. Check your account and a title’s listing rather than relying on another library patron’s allowance.

When do Kanopy tickets reset, and do unused tickets roll over?

For public-library patrons, tickets reset on the first day of each month. Unused tickets do not roll over to the next month, according to Kanopy Help’s “Using tickets” page, updated June 9, 2026.

Do all Kanopy films cost tickets, and how long can I watch one?

No. Some titles are unlimited viewing and use zero tickets, and Kanopy Kids videos are also unlimited viewing. For ticketed titles, check the title page for its cost and viewing period. A series may show a charge per episode and a season access period.

Can I use my library card if my library is not listed on Kanopy?

Kanopy says a library that does not appear in search may not offer the service. Contact the library to confirm whether it participates. If the library is participating but your card or PIN/password is rejected, verify the information with the library, which manages those credentials.

Why does Kanopy say streaming access is limited?

A library may temporarily restrict streaming to manage its budget. This is different from an invalid card or PIN message. You may still be able to finish a title you started if its viewing time remains or watch titles that do not require tickets. Check back for restored access and contact your library with feedback.

Can I watch Kanopy through more than one library?

If you have memberships with multiple participating libraries, you can add another library to the same Kanopy account, with one card per library. Treat each library as a separate access and ticket arrangement; do not assume the allowances merge into one shared pool.

Do university users get monthly tickets?

Kanopy’s monthly ticket guidance here is for public-library patrons. University users select their institution and follow its sign-in flow; whether titles are available depends on the university’s arrangement. Ask the university administrator about academic access.

The Bottom Line

For public-library Kanopy, you need a participating library, its card number and PIN or password, and a Kanopy account. Your library determines the ticket arrangement; tickets reset on the first of the month and do not roll over. Check each title’s cost and viewing period, or look for unlimited and zero-ticket options. University access follows separate institutional rules, and your library or university is the right place to resolve access questions.
