Jon Watts built Wolfs around a simple tension: two men who believe they are one of a kind discover they have been called to the same job. The idea, he said, depended on Brad Pitt and George Clooney together—not as the easygoing friends audiences may associate with Ocean’s Eleven, but as rival fixers who initially resent each other.
The idea that needed two stars
In a September 18, 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, reproduced by AOL, writer-director Jon Watts traced Wolfs to a character concept before it became a reunion vehicle. He wanted an expert who considers himself unique to meet someone essentially like him. “I like the idea of a character that’s an expert, and to put someone who thinks they’re completely unique — that there’s no one else like them in the world — face to face with someone who’s exactly like them,” Watts said.

He arrived at the fixer as the distinctive lone-wolf occupation for that premise. Then came the casting realization: “It’s one of those ideas that doesn’t really work unless it’s the two of them. That’s where it came from.” The two are Pitt and Clooney, whose onscreen partnership had included the Ocean’s trilogy and a brief appearance together in Burn After Reading (2008). The interview says the actors were looking for possible projects for their first onscreen effort together since that film. After they liked the concept, Watts developed the script around their sensibilities and friendship, with Apple aboard.
Friends playing rivals, not another Ocean’s team
The contrast between the performers and their characters is the reunion’s central device. Pitt and Clooney’s real friendship gives their antagonism a playful counterpoint, while the two fixers are not a conventional odd couple built from opposites. Watts describes them as essentially the same guy—men who dislike finding their own habits and competence reflected in someone else.

“They hate each other, so that immediately makes it feel different but also gave them something really fun to play,” Watts said. He wanted viewers to hope the men would become friends, while letting the realization of how alike they are take about half the movie. Their friction turns the familiar star pairing into a source of suspense and comedy: the audience knows the actors have rapport, but the characters have to earn any trust.
Watts also observed that viewers may feel the two stars have a larger shared cinematic history because of how comfortably they interact on press tours. He counts three films together. The point is not to repeat their earlier partnership, but to use audience familiarity as a contrast with characters who have no reason to welcome one another.

One cold night in New York
The story gathers the competing fixers around a late-night emergency involving Margaret, a New York district attorney played by Amy Ryan. Neither man expects another specialist to arrive, and their overlapping jobs force them to cooperate. A young man they call “the kid” complicates the cleanup; the plot includes a large amount of heroin and a stated aim of returning $250,000 worth. That figure is part of the fictional story, not a real-world statistic.
Watts set the action over one cold winter night in New York. In the interview, he said he lives in the city, loves it, and wanted to show actual Chinatown and places he likes. He had spent seven years making Spider-Man films meant to be set in New York while shooting in Atlanta, and wanted to put a winter New York on screen. That describes his stated motivation, not a complete account of Wolfs’ production locations.

Why keep the story to one night?
Watts called Martin Scorsese’s After Hours a “huge inspiration” for the structure. Keeping the action within a single night makes the plot linear, avoids jumps forward in time, and rarely shifts perspective. The choice also creates practical demands: continuity must hold through changing circumstances, and the characters stay in the same clothes throughout.
A Queens motel as a visual reference
A rundown themed hotel in Queens that Watts drove past on his way to JFK informed the motel set. The production could not shoot at the actual place, so set details drew on photographs of real locations. The reference fits the film’s contained, after-hours world without implying that the movie was filmed at that hotel.

Casting the people around the fixers
Watts said he had Austin Abrams in mind for the young man after seeing his work in Jake Schreier’s Paper Towns, while also considering other actors. He ultimately considered Abrams the best fit. Watts imagined Amy Ryan in Margaret’s role and approached her; she was available, and he valued her ability to balance dramatic stakes with dry humor.
The script also includes jokes about the fixers’ age. Watts said Pitt and Clooney liked those jokes; his account supports that limited point, not a broader claim about their private reactions to the film.

The lone-wolf films behind Wolfs
Watts connected his central character idea to a tradition of solitary professionals. Among the examples he named were Le Samouraï, The Killer, Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction, Jean Reno in La Femme Nikita and The Professional, and Killing Them Softly, Michael Clayton and The American. He described them as some of his favorite kinds of movies and said the project gave him an excuse to revisit them.
Those references illuminate the character type; Watts did not make a comparable claim that all the films share Wolfs’ one-night structure. The clearest structural link he named was After Hours. The distinctive twist in Wolfs is to put two would-be lone wolves in the same confined job, then make their similarity—not their difference—the obstacle to getting along.
The 2024 release plan
When the interview appeared on September 18, 2024, it reported a limited theatrical release in select U.S. theaters on September 20, followed by an Apple TV+ release on September 27. Those are historical release dates; the interview does not establish present-day streaming availability by territory or current physical-edition options.
