Jennifer Garner’s Los Angeles home reflects her Southern roots through personal memories and everyday family life—not through a documented claim that the house belongs to a formal Southern architectural style. In Architectural Digest’s 2024 Open Door tour, Garner and her designers describe a warm, historic-feeling farmhouse-inspired home shaped around family routines, outdoor living and reminders of her West Virginia upbringing.
A personal vision, translated into a family home
Garner worked with longtime design collaborators Steve and Brooke Giannetti. Rather than begin with magazine clippings or mood boards, she described the feeling and practical needs she wanted the house to meet. Steve Giannetti translated that brief into a watercolor; Garner says the finished home followed it closely.
Her goal was to balance atmosphere with function: “I wanted it to feel old and cool and historic, but I also wanted to make it work for a big family with a lot of things going on.” The Giannettis describe the project as a two-year process. Laura Putman worked on the interiors, and Christine London designed the landscape.
The resulting look draws on natural wood and texture, gentle forms and vintage furnishings alongside custom pieces. Exposed post-and-beam construction was among the inspirations the designers discussed. Their account emphasizes durability and family use, rather than treating the home as a showroom or a catalogue of purchasable items.

Indoor-outdoor living makes room for family routines
The house connects shared interior spaces with the outdoors through large sliding doors. Steve Giannetti described the intent: “We also connected the indoors and outdoors with massive sliding doors, so the kitchen becomes part of the pool area, and the outdoor porch becomes part of the family room.” That arrangement lets the kitchen, pool area and porch support the same active household rather than functioning as isolated zones.
Family life also shaped the rooms themselves. The tour shows gathering areas, children’s spaces, reading spots and a blue library, extending the home’s practical emphasis beyond the kitchen and outdoor areas. The designers said they sought to preserve family routines within a smaller footprint.

Edible gardens bring Garner’s West Virginia memories close to home
The clearest connection between the landscape and Garner’s roots is the growing space. The property includes a kitchen garden, an orchard and a structure for growing vegetables. Architectural Digest’s gallery says having fruit and vegetables close at hand recalls Garner’s childhood home and farm-family background; ABC’s recap also describes edible offerings in the yard.
Here, the connection is both visual and habitual: produce is part of the home’s daily surroundings, not just a decorative reference to rural life. The published accounts do not establish a specific Southern garden tradition behind the design, so it is more accurate to understand the planting as a personal link to Garner’s upbringing.

Stained glass evokes spring in West Virginia
Artist Reed Bradley created stained-glass windows with a specific memory in mind. In the tour transcript, Garner says, “I wanted it to be evocative of spring in West Virginia.” Architectural Digest’s gallery adds that the windows draw on illustrations from All the World, a children’s book that is a family favorite. The artwork makes the geographic connection explicit without suggesting that the whole house reproduces a regional architectural style.

The published tour and companion features present the house as Garner’s personal, family-centered interpretation of farmhouse style. Its connection to her West Virginia upbringing comes through her stated memories, the edible landscape and the stained glass—not through a formal architectural classification as “Southern.” The home’s character is built from those individual choices: a historic-feeling atmosphere, rooms for a busy family, open connections to outdoor space, food-growing areas and artwork tied to a place she remembers.
