Jake “The Snake” Roberts said the DDT began with a fall he did not plan: an opponent stepped on his feet while Roberts held a front facelock, and both men toppled backward. The opponent landed on his head; Roberts landed on his back. When the crowd reacted, Roberts realized the mishap might be worth turning into a wrestling move.
Roberts’ account of the accidental fall
In a 2016 interview, Roberts described the moment in direct, visual terms: “Yeah, it was an accident. I was in the ring wrestling. I had a front facelock on a guy. He stepped on my feet and we fell backwards. He went on his head. I went on my back. And the fans went ‘OOOOHH.’”
Roberts recalled that the crowd’s sharp reaction made him think he had something. He then began working on the move. In his telling, the DDT’s origin was not a rehearsed invention but an accidental fall followed by a decision to develop what the audience had responded to.
What the story establishes—and what it does not
This is Roberts’ own recollection, given in an interview published in 2016. It supports the “complete accident” framing as his account of how the move started. The interview does not independently establish the exact match, date, venue, promotion, or opponent, so those details should not be presented as confirmed.
