Jack O’Connell’s Remmick is an Irish vampire who arrives in the American South, and that contrast shapes the performance: he speaks with an Irish brogue rooted in O’Connell’s family connections to Kerry and Munster, then adopts a Southern sound as part of Remmick’s presentation. O’Connell also described practical effects behind two striking injury details—a guitar fragment held in place with magnets and smoke produced live after Remmick is hurt by silver.
Who is Remmick in Sinners?
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners stars O’Connell as Remmick, an Irish vampire who enters the American South. The film’s official site lists O’Connell among the cast and gives its international theatrical release start as April 16, 2025, followed by its U.S. theatrical release on April 18, 2025. The official film site provides the production and release information.
Remmick’s Irish identity is not simply a detail of his backstory. Interview coverage connects it to the character’s music and presence, while O’Connell’s account of the accent choices makes the contrast audible: one voice draws on his own family’s region, and the other is a role Remmick performs.
How O’Connell built Remmick’s two accents
In an interview with GQ, O’Connell said he based Remmick’s Irishness on the Kerry/Munster region associated with his family. For the Southern accent, he described Remmick as pretending to be from North Carolina. The distinction matters: the Southern sound is not presented as O’Connell simply switching between two regional accents, but as Remmick putting on an identity.

That performance gives the character’s arrival an added tension. Remmick is an outsider in the South, yet he can adopt a local-sounding manner. That reading follows from the accent choice; it is an interpretation of the effect, rather than a separate claim by O’Connell about the character’s motives.
What practical effects shaped Remmick’s injuries?
O’Connell also discussed how the production made two specific moments work on camera. He said the guitar piece in Remmick’s face used magnets. He described the smoke visible after Remmick is harmed by silver as practical smoke produced live during filming, rather than an effect added later. These are details about those moments, not a claim that every effect in Sinners was practical.

The effects support the performance by giving O’Connell physical details to react around. The guitar fragment and silver-related smoke make the vampire’s vulnerability visible without turning the actor’s discussion of how they were made into a claim about the film’s broader effects approach.

W Magazine describes Remmick as seeking to turn others and take their memories, talents, and music, and reads his language of fellowship against the film’s Jim Crow setting. That is the magazine’s critical interpretation, not a statement of the film’s moral position. Remmick’s rhetoric belongs to a predatory character; it should not be mistaken for the film endorsing his view. W Magazine’s profile develops that reading.

HERO Magazine’s interview coverage likewise places the character’s Irish identity and music in the context of his arrival in the South. Together, those details help explain why the accent work is central to the portrayal: Remmick’s performed Southern identity sits alongside an Irishness tied to his origins. HERO Magazine discusses the character in that context.
