Smoove didn’t literally change Larry David’s private life, at least not in any documented account. What he changed was the comic life of Curb Your Enthusiasm: as Leon Black, he gave David’s fictionalized Larry a bold, unpredictable foil—and built a partnership that lasted through the show’s final season.
How J.B. Smoove got cast as Leon
Smoove was already a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm when an audition opportunity arose in Los Angeles. He went in character and improvised with David. In a 2017 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Smoove recalled being told, “OK J.B., you’re gonna improv with Larry.” A 2024 TheWrap interview also recounts how excited he was to get the last-minute chance and how he went straight to the audition.

Executive producer Jeff Schaffer remembered Smoove entering the room as Leon, sitting down, and getting a laugh before he had said anything. Schaffer credited the immediate chemistry between Smoove and David. Smoove recalled David telling him after their first day together, “It feels as though we’ve been working together for years,” as reported in The Washington Post. Those are the participants’ recollections of a creative partnership, not evidence of a change to David’s private life.
What Leon brought to Larry’s world
Larry’s comic reflex is to fret over perceived slights, social rules and his own discomfort. Leon’s is nearly the opposite: he meets awkwardness with confidence, unconventional advice and an expansive store of personal lore. The contrast gives Larry someone who can challenge his assumptions without becoming a conventional voice of reason.

An early Season 6 example, described by The Washington Post, makes the difference plain. Larry tells Leon that a white supremacist insulted him and that he failed to respond. Rather than console him, Leon urges him to retaliate. The joke comes from the gap between Larry’s fixation on the incident and Leon’s forceful, unexpected answer.
Leon arrived in Season 6, after the show had already run for five seasons. That season introduced the displaced Black family Larry took in following a hurricane; Leon became the lasting character from that storyline. His arrival changed the balance of Larry’s scenes, but it did not create the show’s identity from scratch.
How improvisation made Leon feel lived-in
Curb Your Enthusiasm used outlines rather than fully scripted dialogue, giving its actors room to shape scenes while following the story. Smoove described the format as an invitation to make choices in character and add details to Leon’s background. If the writers liked a detail, they could bring it into the story and develop it further. This does not mean every line was improvised: the actors riffed within an outlined structure.
In a 2024 TIME interview, Smoove discussed how those choices and additions helped build Leon over time. Schaffer summed up the value of that process in a line quoted by The Washington Post: “Every day with J.B. on set is Christmas because we get to sit there and unwrap all of these presents that he gives us.” The metaphor describes the creative possibilities Smoove brought to a scene—and the writers’ ability to keep what served the story.

Leon’s place in the series
Smoove joined as Leon in Season 6 and remained part of the show through Season 12, its final season in 2024. In interviews around the finale, Smoove reflected on both the ending and the character’s place in the series. TIME described his improvisational contribution as central to Leon’s appeal and observed that the character had become difficult to imagine the show without; that is a critical assessment, not a measured audience finding.
Smoove also wrote The Book of Leon: Philosophy of a Fool in the character’s voice, a related extension of Leon rather than evidence about David’s personal life, as noted by PhillyVoice.

The available accounts support a more precise answer: Smoove changed the dynamic around Larry, David’s fictionalized character, by giving him a durable scene partner whose confidence and unpredictability could expose Larry’s neuroses from a new angle. Their quick rapport and the show’s outlined, improvisational format helped turn Leon into a recurring presence. The headline’s “changed Larry David’s life” works as a dramatic description of that on-screen and creative impact—not as a verified claim about David’s off-screen life.
