The show is not presented as a literal D&D campaign.
How D&D works inside the story
The boys’ game establishes a shared world of imagination and helps show the bond between them. When they face frightening events, they reach for familiar D&D names and concepts to make sense of what they do not yet understand. That is why a game monster such as Vecna can become a name for a threat in their lives: it gives the characters a common frame of reference, not an explanation that the supernatural events are happening inside a game.

The Duffers have also described the game as useful beyond its references. In a Netflix Tudum interview, Matt Duffer said they wanted to use D&D because its role-playing element makes it immersive. That is the creators’ stated reason for drawing on the game as a storytelling tool, rather than evidence that the series adapts a particular campaign. Read the Netflix Tudum interview with Matt Duffer.
Why D&D matters in the finale
The game also frames the series’ ending. The group finishes one last campaign in the Wheelers’ basement, echoing the boys’ opening game. Ross Duffer said the basement scene is about the characters saying goodbye to childhood; he described the final handoff as their time to leave the game behind and pass the torch to the next group of kids. The closing game therefore completes a deliberate bookend: D&D begins as part of the group’s childhood and helps mark its end. Read the Duffers’ Netflix Tudum interview about the finale.
