Gladiator II gets the central family conflict partly right: Geta and Caracalla were brothers who shared power, and Caracalla had Geta killed. They were not twins, however, and the film reshapes their chronology, personalities and political circle for dramatic effect. Treat it as historical fiction, not a reconstruction of events.
Were Geta and Caracalla twins?
No. Geta was the younger son of Septimius Severus; Caracalla was his elder brother. Their birth relationship was brotherhood, not twinhood. The confusion may come from later portraits that presented the brothers with a twin-like resemblance. The Museo Nacional del Prado notes this visual convention, but it is not evidence that they were born twins: Prado’s object record. The British Museum’s biography likewise identifies Geta as Severus’s younger son: British Museum: Geta.

Did the brothers really rule together?
Yes, but not from the same starting point suggested by the film’s compressed setup. Their father elevated them to imperial rank at different times. According to Smithsonian Magazine’s 2024 account, Caracalla became co-emperor in 198 CE, Geta in 209 CE, and the brothers shared power after Septimius Severus died in 211 CE.
| Year | Historical event |
|---|---|
| 198 CE | Septimius Severus elevates Caracalla to co-emperor. |
| 209 CE | Geta is elevated to co-emperor. |
| 211 CE | Severus dies; Geta and Caracalla share imperial power. |
| About ten months later | Caracalla orders Geta’s killing, according to the Smithsonian’s summary of the historical account. |
| 217 CE | Caracalla is assassinated and Macrinus succeeds him. |
The dates establish a real co-rule, but the film’s dramatic sequence should not be mistaken for the precise historical path to it.

Did Caracalla really kill Geta?
Yes. The Smithsonian summarizes the traditional account as saying Caracalla ordered centurions to kill Geta after roughly ten months of joint rule. Caracalla then tried to erase his brother’s memory from public life, a political aftermath also noted by the British Museum.
The broad event is historical; the exact staging and intimate details belong to accounts transmitted from antiquity, not a scene-by-scene record we can independently verify. Historian François Chausson, quoted by Smithsonian, notes that “Caracalla always justified himself by claiming that his brother had plotted against him.” That is a reported justification, not proof of Geta’s intentions.
Rank #2
- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
Do the film’s portrayals match the historical emperors?
Only loosely. The screen versions are dramatic constructions, and modern descriptions of their temperaments depend substantially on ancient accounts written in a political context. It is safer to distinguish documented roles from confident claims about private personality.
Caracalla
The film’s decadent caricature is a poor fit for the emperor as described by historians interviewed in coverage of the film. Jon Iddeng told Science Norway that the historical Caracalla was a soldier-emperor who took part in military campaigns. This does not make every detail of his character recoverable; it does show why the movie’s presentation should not be treated as a straightforward portrait.

Geta
Modern summaries often associate Geta more with civil administration, but that characterization draws on ancient narratives and should be treated as an attributed portrait, not a settled psychological profile. What is firmer is his position as Severus’s younger son, co-ruler with Caracalla, and victim of his brother’s seizure of sole power.
The monkey and the Senate
The film’s episode in which Caracalla’s monkey is appointed to the Senate is fiction, not an established event. Iddeng describes it as a joke with an apparent echo of the story about Caligula’s horse. It works as a cinematic allusion, not evidence about Caracalla.

Which surrounding characters and events are changed?
Lucilla’s timeline
Lucilla’s active role in the brothers’ period does not fit the chronology: she was executed in 182 CE, decades before their joint reign began in 211. Her presence in the story is a clear example of the film rearranging history for its plot, as noted in Smithsonian’s historical comparison.
Macrinus’s identity
Macrinus was a North African Praetorian prefect and lawyer who succeeded Caracalla in 217 CE. The film’s gladiator-trainer backstory is unsupported by the historical accounts cited here. The name and eventual succession are historical; the role is recast. See TIME’s account of Macrinus.

Naval battles and sharks
Mock naval battles did take place in Roman arenas, and the Colosseum may have hosted them early in its history. The sharks in the film, however, are fictional, according to the historian interviewed by Science Norway. This spectacle is a useful example of the film combining a real Roman practice with invented detail.
How should you watch Gladiator II as history?
Use the film as a prompt to investigate Roman power politics, not as a reliable account of the brothers’ lives. Historian Ray Laurence, interviewed by Macquarie University’s The Lighthouse, put the distinction plainly: “If we accept film is film and not history, Gladiator II is enormous fun and in many ways is successful in its visual depiction of Rome.” The film has a historical foundation in the co-rule and fratricide, while much of the surrounding narrative is altered or invented.
For a wider introduction to Roman rule rather than a focused study of Geta and Caracalla, Smithsonian’s coverage names Mary Beard’s Emperor of Rome: Ruling the Ancient Roman World.
