Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya’s shrine became a pilgrimage site gradually: followers gathered around the Sufi saint during his lifetime in Ghiyaspur, devotion continued at his tomb after his death, and later building and patronage shaped the shrine and the surrounding settlement. Nita Berry recounts that history in an excerpt from Once Upon a Time in Delhi: Discovering the Secrets of Its Many Cities, published by Scroll on November 4, 2024. The available accounts point to a long process, not a single founding date.
From Ghiyaspur to a shrine associated with the saint
In Berry’s account, Nizamuddin Auliya lived in Ghiyaspur for decades and drew people seeking his guidance and blessings. The village became associated with his name; after his death, his tomb became one of Delhi’s most venerated shrines. This is a narrative of how devotion took root, rather than a precisely dated institutional record of when pilgrimage began. Read the Scroll excerpt.
A sacred site shaped into a historic settlement
The shrine grew within a wider urban landscape. UNESCO’s Delhi Tentative List describes the dargah and adjacent precinct as “a unique representation of a historic settlement that developed around a religious shrine, over a long period of time.” It also connects the area’s tombs and mosques to the veneration of the saint. The description is a heritage account of the precinct, not a claim that it is a World Heritage-inscribed site. UNESCO’s Delhi Tentative List entry.
That long development matters: the present complex should not be treated as a single building erected at one moment. India’s National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities records additions and renovations to the dargah. Its entry on the Jamaat Khana mosque says Muhammad Tughlaq added side chambers to accommodate increasing devotees. Devotion and neighborhood life
The relationship between the shrine and Nizamuddin basti is also part of its history. Michael Thomas Paschal Snyder’s study traces the settlement from an early community of shrine caretakers to its later, denser form, emphasizing how community, land, and place developed together. That perspective helps explain why the dargah is not only a monument but the center of a living historic neighborhood; it does not, by itself, establish a dated medieval chronology. Snyder’s study in the Columbia Undergraduate Journal of South Asian Studies.
Pilgrimage continues through commemorations
Delhi Tourism describes fairs held on the death anniversaries of Nizamuddin Auliya and Amir Khusrau, with pilgrims arriving from across India. The shrine complex also includes the tombs of Amir Khusrau and Jahanara Begum, bringing devotional practice into contact with Delhi’s wider political and cultural history.
