Players can help signal which titles matter through GOG Dreamlist or choose to support the work through the optional monthly GOG Patrons program. Neither route guarantees that every lost or unavailable game will be recovered.
What GOG means by game preservation
For GOG, preservation is primarily a technical commitment: keep particular games playable on modern systems after their original developers have stopped supporting them. The company sells DRM-free games and offers technical support, but the Preservation Program adds a specific process for selected titles: testing, remediation where needed, and continued compatibility maintenance. GOG describes the program and its scope on its official page.
That is meaningful work, but narrower than preserving the full history of a game. The program does not, by itself, promise to recover every historically important title, overcome licensing barriers, restore lost source code, preserve every version or platform, or make an unavailable game legally distributable.
How a game enters the program and stays maintained
- GOG tests the game. A title must pass the company’s quality tests before it receives the program stamp.
- GOG addresses problems where necessary. The company says its team updates or improves games that do not initially meet its standards.
- GOG commits to compatibility maintenance. Updates to Windows or graphics drivers can introduce problems. GOG asks players to report issues so it can verify them and work on fixes for everyone.
GOG says it aims to preserve the original experience rather than automatically add community modifications. It also says it does not want responsibility for maintaining a game shifted onto fans.

Will a GOG game work on a modern PC?
A Preservation Program stamp indicates that GOG has tested the title against its standards and undertaken maintenance; it is not a promise that a game will work on every PC configuration indefinitely. Compatibility can change as operating systems and graphics drivers change, which is why GOG asks users to report problems.
The program is currently Windows-only, according to GOG’s live FAQ. The company frames expansion to other operating systems as a later priority, so the program should not be read as certification for macOS or Linux. Check the individual game’s listing for its stated system support.

How community members can help
Signal interest through Dreamlist
GOG’s Dreamlist lets players register interest in games they would like to see addressed. It is a way to communicate demand, not a guarantee that GOG can secure a title’s rights, add it to the store or include it in the Preservation Program.
Support restoration through GOG Patrons
GOG Patrons is an optional monthly support program. GOG says contributions help restore, maintain and improve more classic PC games through the Preservation Program. The company described the program as being for people who want to support that work: “GOG Patrons exists only for people who want to help us restore, maintain, and improve even more classic PC games through the GOG Preservation Program.” — The GOG Team, GOG Patrons announcement.

What happens if a program game is delisted?
GOG says delisting a game does not remove it from the Preservation Program: it intends to continue compatibility work for titles already in the program even when they are no longer for sale. That is a maintenance commitment, not a guarantee that the game will remain purchasable or available in every country.

How large is the program?
The catalog changes over time. GOG’s official program page displayed 283 games when accessed on October 8, 2026. PC Gamer reported 250 on November 1, 2025, noting examples including Splinter Cell, Resident Evil: HD Remaster, Hitman: Codename 47 and Clive Barker’s Undying. These are dated snapshots rather than a fixed program total. PC Gamer’s November 2025 report provides the earlier count.

GOG’s 2024 launch announcement said the initiative began with 100 classic games and used updated, improved or quality-tested builds. The announcement also attributed this statistic to the Video Game History Foundation: “87% of games created before 2010 are inaccessible today.” That is a figure reported by GOG, citing the Foundation; the Foundation’s underlying study and definition of “inaccessible” are not established here. GOG’s launch announcement, reproduced on r/Games explains the program’s initial framing.

Compatibility work addresses one important cause of games becoming difficult to play: older software may stop running reliably as current systems change. But technical fixes cannot alone resolve rights and licensing obstacles or guarantee the recovery of games whose usable versions are no longer available. GOG’s program is best understood as ongoing care for a selected catalog, with community interest and optional funding helping shape and support that effort.
