The biggest change in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is its point of view: the monsters take more of the narrative lead. Instead of relying chiefly on the spectacle of Godzilla and Kong fighting, director Adam Wingard gives them room to act, interact and carry parts of the story without human dialogue.
What changed most: the monsters become the storytellers
Godzilla vs. Kong brought its two central Titans together through a conflict that eventually became a global-scale battle. For the sequel, Wingard said he was more interested in what the monsters do between action scenes. He described that emphasis to io9 as “almost like a character study, but with monsters,” and said he wanted to lean into the monster point of view.
That is a shift in dramatic emphasis, not a claim that the sequel abandons its human cast or makes every scene monster-only. The humans still connect events and provide context, but the Titans’ behavior and relationships carry more of the storytelling.
How the monster-centered approach appears on screen
Long passages without human dialogue
Wingard told io9 that the Skar King’s introduction runs for nearly eight minutes without humans or dialogue. The Associated Press likewise noted extended dialogue-free passages focused on the monsters. These sequences let action, movement and creature interaction do work that a more human-centered film might assign to conversation.

Monsters between the fights
The emphasis is not only on making battles bigger. Wingard’s stated interest was in watching the creatures interact between them. Those quieter stretches give the Titans a presence beyond being opponents or weapons in a human plot.
Kong and Jia follow parallel paths of discovery
The sequel also connects Kong’s and Jia’s stories through discovery in Hollow Earth. In Warner Bros.’ production notes, Wingard described Kong encountering others of his kind in a harsh subterranean world, while Jia discovers surviving Iwi within a civilization there. He framed both journeys around the question of what it means to be the last of one’s kind.

- Item name: Godzilla Vs. Kong
- Product type: PHYSICAL MOVIE
- Brand: Warner Bros.
This gives the film a character thread alongside its escalating monster conflict: Kong and Jia are each confronted with the possibility of belonging to a larger community. Their discoveries are different, but the parallel makes the Hollow Earth story more than a setting for another threat.
Godzilla’s changed appearance has a story reason
Godzilla looks different in The New Empire, but Wingard wanted the change to happen on screen rather than appear as an unexplained redesign between movies. In the production notes, he said he wanted the evolution to be “motivated by something going on in the movie” and for viewers to see it occur within the film.

Wingard also linked the new look to the heightened, sometimes absurd tone of the Showa-era Godzilla films. The redesign therefore serves two purposes: it is part of the story’s events and a visual expression of the sequel’s more exuberant approach.

The earlier film built toward a clash between Godzilla and Kong; the sequel gives them a common adversary in Skar King. Wingard said the story needed a threat large enough to require a team. The conflict also recasts the franchise’s recurring concern about humanity endangering the planet through a monster-centered perspective.
The result is an evolution in how the films use their Titans: the first brings Godzilla and Kong into opposition, while the sequel makes their alliance—and what they reveal through their behavior—the engine of the story.
