The part followed years of acting work and brought major industry recognition, including a 2015 Golden Globe. Her career story is not a tale of one award creating instant success: it is a progression from early screen roles to a defining television performance, followed by work as an actor and producer.
Before the breakthrough: theater, film and television roles
The Television Academy’s biography traces Rodriguez’s work from theater to screen, including a starring role in the 2012 Sundance film Filly Brown, a recurring part on The Bold and the Beautiful, and guest appearances on Longmire and Rizzoli & Isles. This is a snapshot of early credits, not a complete filmography. Television Academy

Those roles established a body of acting work before her most visible part arrived. The Academy describes Jane Villanueva as the role that catapulted Rodriguez to fame.
Jane the Virgin made her a household name
The CW’s Jane the Virgin premiered in 2014, with Rodriguez playing Jane Villanueva. The Golden Globes later described the show’s five-season run as the star-making role in her career. Its centrality to her rise is clear, though the available record does not establish that any single event alone caused her later opportunities. Television Academy · Golden Globes interview, 2020

Why the role resonated with Rodriguez
In a TIME interview published in October 2014, Rodriguez said she valued that Jane’s ethnicity was integrated into her life rather than treated as a separate conversation: “To read a story about a young girl where her ethnicity wasn’t at the forefront, where her dual identity was so integrated in life that it didn’t feel like a separate conversation, was such a breath of fresh air.” TIME, October 2014
That perspective helps explain what the part meant to her beyond its visibility. She saw the character’s everyday, multidimensional portrayal as a meaningful form of representation.
The 2015 Golden Globe brought a defining recognition
Rodriguez won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Jane the Virgin in 2015. The official awards record also lists nominations for the same role in 2016 and 2017: one win and two further nominations. Golden Globes award record
Around the time of the win, the Television Academy called Rodriguez the first CW star to win a Golden Globe and the third Latina winner in that category. That is the Academy’s historical framing of the specific category, not a claim about all Golden Globe categories. Television Academy

A family message became part of her acceptance story
In a TIME interview in June 2015, Rodriguez recalled that her father encouraged her each morning with “Today is going to be a great day. I can and I will.” She said she echoed that message in her acceptance speech, ending with: “Well, Dad-today is a great day. I can and I did.” TIME, June 2015
Using visibility to widen representation
Rodriguez has also spoken about the pressures she sees facing Latina performers. In a 2020 Golden Globes interview, she said, “I think what I have personally experienced as a woman and as a Latina, I am not given that many chances to fail as an artist and I think we have seen that historically those women aren’t given that many chances to fail when they have done a big movie.” This is her account of her experience, not a measured statistic about the industry. The same interview described Rodriguez acting in and producing Diary of a Future President and her interest in using producer influence to change who appears on screen. It also quoted her father’s advice: “you have to believe that you can, you have to envision yourself doing it, you have to write down your goals and work towards accomplishing them.” These details describe the conversation in 2020, not a current project slate. Rodriguez’s ascent is best understood as a sequence: earlier theater, film and television work gave way to a lead role that placed her at the center of a five-season series; the Golden Globe win made that performance especially visible; and she used interviews and producing work to discuss representation and opportunity. The award record verifies the recognition, while Rodriguez’s own interviews explain what the role and her subsequent influence meant to her.
