Spoilers for the Squid Game Season 3 finale. Gi-hun may have changed the Front Man not by defeating him in an argument, but by refusing to abandon his belief in human decency—even when the game pushed him toward despair. Actor Lee Byung-hun reads their time together as a two-way contest: the Front Man wants Gi-hun to lose hope, yet Lee hopes Gi-hun has planted a seed of hope in him, too.
What the Front Man wanted from Gi-hun
After the failed rebellion at the end of Season 2, the Front Man returns to the control room and continues the contest with Gi-hun. In Season 2, he had entered the game disguised as Young-il, a man Gi-hun trusted. That history makes the confrontation more than a struggle to survive: Gi-hun had believed Young-il was someone he could depend on, and learning who he really was leaves him questioning his own judgment, as Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 finale explainer describes.

Lee Byung-hun says the Front Man is not chiefly trying to decide whether Gi-hun lives or dies. He wants to dismantle the belief that people can choose to act decently. As Lee puts it, “Front Man wants to dismantle the noble belief that Gi-hun holds on to.” The Front Man expects Gi-hun to become like him: convinced that power rules and other people ultimately obey.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk frames the conflict as a clash of outlooks. The Front Man wants Gi-hun to accept his bleak reading of the world, rather than keep looking for reasons to trust people. That ideological aim explains why the Front Man’s manipulation matters as much as the deadly game itself.

How Gi-hun resisted that pressure
Gi-hun is shaken by betrayal and by what the games reveal about people under pressure, but he does not ultimately embrace the Front Man’s antisocial outlook. In the finale, he sacrifices himself to protect the baby. His choice preserves the principle the Front Man has been trying to break: another person’s life can matter more than survival or victory.
Hwang captures the contrast by saying, “Gi-hun is pure fire in that moment, while Front Man is ice.” The image fits their opposing methods: the Front Man tries to make Gi-hun accept cold fatalism, while Gi-hun answers with a choice rooted in care for someone vulnerable.

Did Gi-hun’s sacrifice change the Front Man?
The finale offers evidence of a humane impulse, not proof of a complete moral transformation. After Gi-hun’s sacrifice, the Front Man saves the baby and later leaves her with his brother, Jun-ho. Those actions suggest that Gi-hun’s example may have reached him, but they do not undo the Front Man’s earlier decisions or establish that he has rejected his worldview.
Lee has described the Front Man as having a “last remaining piece of humanity” and said, “I hope that there is some kind of change sprouting inside of him.” That is the actor’s interpretation and hope for what viewers will perceive—not a declaration that the character openly reforms. The most careful reading is reciprocal influence: the Front Man tries to make Gi-hun surrender hope, while Gi-hun’s refusal may awaken something the Front Man has tried to suppress.

Why Gi-hun’s change matters to the conflict
Gi-hun is not unchanged by the games. His trust has been badly damaged, and his hope is tested rather than presented as easy or uncomplicated. Lee Jung-jae has described Gi-hun’s development as detailed and layered, saying, “All of those changes within Gi-hun are depicted in such minute detail, so nuanced and with so many layers,” in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
That complexity sharpens the ending. Gi-hun’s sacrifice is not evidence that he never doubted people; it shows what he chooses after betrayal and loss. The Front Man can expose the cost of that belief, but Gi-hun’s final act denies him the proof he wants—that everyone will eventually put themselves first.
