Ghostbusters: Afterlife brought Egon back as a digital ghost, but the emotional purpose came first: director Jason Reitman wanted the original team to say goodbye and Egon’s family to find a moment of reconciliation. Actor Bob Gunton performed Egon on set; MPC used that performance alongside archival Harold Ramis material to build an aged, recognizable likeness for the reunion.
Why did Ghostbusters: Afterlife bring Egon back?
The ending was the reason Jason Reitman said he knew he had to make the film. He wanted a final encounter that could do several things at once: reunite the original Ghostbusters, let Egon meet his granddaughter Phoebe, and give his daughter Callie the chance to embrace and forgive him.
Reitman described the idea as “generational forgiveness.” Egon’s return is therefore not a conventional comeback in which a character resumes his life. It is a brief, impossible meeting that resolves family estrangement and gives the original team a farewell. As Reitman put it, “This is a movie that doesn’t end with an explosion. It’s a movie that ends with a hug.” TheWrap’s 2021 interview with Reitman explains the emotional aim behind the scene.
The story’s family focus fits the film’s setup. Sony describes Afterlife as a 2021 Jason Reitman film about a mother and her children discovering their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the legacy of their grandfather. Sony’s official film page lists Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman as the writers.

How did they recreate Harold Ramis as Egon?
Harold Ramis, who played Egon in the original films, died in 2014. He did not perform new footage for Afterlife. Instead, the production anchored the scene in a live performance and built the digital face from reference material.
Bob Gunton performed Egon on set
Actor Bob Gunton played Egon during production. That gave the other actors a physical scene partner and gave the visual-effects team movement and performance reference. TheWrap’s account describes the digital replacement as principally involving the head and neck in the process it discusses; that is not evidence that every shot used the same setup.

MPC built the likeness from archival and production reference
MPC’s Character Lab studied the 1984 and 1989 films, including previously unseen footage and alternate takes, to find useful angles and expressions. The team also used scans and photographs from Gunton’s on-set performance, concept art for an older Egon, and additional skin and life-model reference.
From those materials, the artists developed a facial model and rig, then created photoreal hair, skin, and eyes. The process began by matching the younger Egon audiences knew from the original film. MPC then aged that likeness toward the filmmakers’ concept art. The goal was a recognizable older Egon—not a literal prediction of precisely how Harold Ramis would have looked at that age.

MPC DFX supervisor Sebastien Raets described this as exploring “the aging process to reflect concept art supplied by the filmmakers.” The vendor’s account lays out the production stages in more detail: MPC’s breakdown of Egon’s digital recreation.
The ghost effect was kept restrained
A glow and partial transparency could have made the image read as a ghost, but they could also have obscured the face. Reitman told TheWrap that the team considered how much of each effect to use. The intention was for the ghost treatment to support a likeness that already worked, rather than conceal a weak match.

How long did it take to bring Egon back?
Reitman estimated to TheWrap in 2021 that the process of returning Egon took “two years.” That is the director’s reported production estimate, not an independently audited timeline. The available production accounts describe the overall method but do not establish a reliable shot count, artist count, render-hour total, or a shot-by-shot list of which performer or technique appears in each moment.

Egon’s digital recreation was part of a broader effort to connect the sequel’s look to the original films. Reitman said he researched how the first Ghostbusters was made and wanted to combine older Hollywood effects techniques with computer technology. In a PlayStation Blog interview, he called this an effort to recover the original “recipe” through “the bleeding edge of computer technology” and “the most old school Hollywood effects.”

The approach was a mix, not a claim that the film was entirely practical or entirely CGI. Reitman discussed physical props and practical creature effects alongside selective digital work, and described Afterlife as a direct sequel with a visual approach intended to echo the earlier movies. The film’s family and franchise connections also reflect Reitman’s own history with the series: his father, Ivan Reitman, directed the original Ghostbusters.
What the reunion means
The effects work serves a specific dramatic purpose: to make a farewell feel like a meeting between people who loved and hurt one another. Gunton’s on-set performance supplied a human performance to build on; archival Ramis material helped MPC shape an audience-recognizable face; and the restrained ghost treatment kept that face visible at the moment the story needed it.
Reitman said Erica Ramis and Violet Ramis read the script, visited production and editing, and reviewed the finished film. That is his account of their involvement; it does not establish a separate formal approval process.
