For his portrayal in Ozark, he looked to ordinary people and grounded behavior, then focused in scenes on what Navarro was doing to the person opposite him. That approach made the character legible as a person; it did not make his violence or criminal choices acceptable.
What Solis said he was trying to do
In a People Chica interview published May 6, 2022, during Ozark’s fourth season, Solis described humanizing a role as a responsibility of acting: “My responsibility as an actor seems to be that I try to make every character that I play somebody that is more human.” For Navarro specifically, he put the idea more simply: “The only thing I know how to do is play the human inside of this character.”

He was not arguing that Navarro was good or that the character should be excused. The point was to play a recognizable person within the part, rather than make the performance a display of what viewers might expect a criminal to look or act like.
How he looked for grounded behavior
Solis said he did not study drug dealers to imitate them. Instead, he observed people whose everyday lives offered behavior he could draw on, including families with farms, small-business owners and bodega owners. He was looking for ordinary human details, not evidence that cartel leaders behave like Navarro.

That distinction matters: the interview describes an actor’s creative choices, not a criminological account of real criminal organizations. Solis used familiar behavior as a way into the role without presenting Navarro as a model for real people in the drug trade.
Why he focused on what Navarro did to others
In scene work, Solis said he asked what he was doing to the other person in the scene, rather than concentrating only on what Navarro wanted. That action-oriented focus could shape the intention and texture of an interaction. Solis described playing some exchanges as attempts to affect or help another person, even though Navarro’s larger role in the story is dangerous.

This is a way to make a moment feel human from the character’s point of view; it is not a verdict on the consequences of his behavior. A character can believe an action is helpful, or direct it toward another person, while still causing harm and remaining accountable for what he does.
What the script allowed—and what it fixed
Solis said he had to perform the role as written. Within those scripted beats, he could choose how to play an action: its delivery, intention and effect on the scene partner. The distinction is between shaping the performance and changing the story’s actions. His method gave him room to add human specificity without erasing what Navarro did.

Where Navarro fits in Ozark
Netflix lists Ozark as a four-season series. Its Media Center description frames the drama around the Byrde family’s journey from suburban Chicago into a criminal enterprise in the Ozarks, Missouri, and includes Solis in the cast. That setting supplies the story context for Navarro, but Netflix’s pages do not independently confirm Solis’s acting process; his interview is the source for that.
Solis’s account offers a clear boundary for interpreting the performance: humanizing a character means making his behavior recognizable and specific, not asking the viewer to approve of it. Navarro can be played as a person without being absolved as a dangerous one.
