Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818) ties fear more directly to Victor Frankenstein’s creation of a living being, his abandonment of it, and the consequences that follow. The novels are 24 years apart, and their contrasting methods make a useful comparison: Radcliffe prolongs suspense around Emily’s danger, while Shelley makes Victor confront the results of his own choices.
Which texts and editions does this comparison cover?
The Mysteries of Udolpho was first published in 1794; Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus followed in 1818. This comparison uses Project Gutenberg’s transcription of Shelley’s 1818 text, identified as based on a photo-reprint of the first edition. It should not be treated as the revised 1831 text: wording, punctuation, and pagination can differ across editions.
The distinction matters because the comparison concerns how fear is structured in these particular novels, not a single Gothic formula shared by both authors.
How does Radcliffe make fear persist in Udolpho?
Emily’s vulnerability and limited knowledge
Radcliffe centers the novel on Emily St. Aubert, whose bereavement and changing guardianship place her in a precarious position. Montoni’s coercive authority restricts her choices. The reader often encounters danger through Emily’s constrained perspective: she must interpret sights and sounds without having enough information to know what they mean or what will happen next.

The castle and suspense
Udolpho’s oppressive spaces intensify that uncertainty. Fear grows from the gap between what Emily can observe and what she can understand, as well as from the threat to her safety and the possibility of confinement. Suspense therefore has room to last: the reader shares Emily’s uncertainty rather than receiving an immediate, complete explanation of every apparent danger.
How does Shelley connect fear to responsibility in Frankenstein?
Creation and abandonment
Victor’s fear begins within a chain of choices for which he bears responsibility. He creates a living being and then refuses it; the creature’s isolation and later retaliation bring the consequences of that rejection back to Victor. The threat is not only an external force pursuing him. It is also bound to what he did and failed to do.

The 1818 preface and supernatural terror
Shelley’s 1818 preface cautions against treating the novel as merely a sequence of supernatural scares. She writes that, in using an imaginative premise, she has “not considered myself as merely weaving a series of supernatural terrors.” The statement frames the story as more than a succession of frightening incidents; it does not, by itself, settle every interpretation of the novel. Shelley also notes in the preface that she and two friends agreed to write stories “founded on some supernatural occurrence,” providing context for the tale’s origin.
How do the novels differ in viewpoint, threat, and character action?
| Comparison | The Mysteries of Udolpho | Frankenstein (1818) |
|---|---|---|
| Source of threat | Montoni’s coercive authority, Emily’s vulnerability, and dangers associated with the castle and uncertain appearances. | Victor’s creation and abandonment of the creature, followed by the creature’s pursuit and retaliation. |
| How fear is sustained | Restricted knowledge, suspense, threatened confinement, and Emily’s uncertain interpretation of events. | Retrospective narration, responsibility, anticipation of consequences, and escalating loss. |
| Character agency | Emily has limited power within a hierarchy controlled by Montoni; endurance and judgment matter alongside action. | Victor’s choices help create the danger he later fears; the creature’s account complicates a simple monster-and-victim division. |
This contrast is an interpretation grounded in the novels, not a claim that the authors shared or stated a common theory of fear. Radcliffe’s method makes the reader feel how suspense presses on someone with little control over her circumstances. Shelley’s makes fear increasingly inseparable from responsibility and the destructive aftermath of decisions.

How can you use this comparison in an essay?
Build an argument around a difference in how fear works, then support it with passages from the editions you are using. Cite the text and edition when quoting; chapter or preface references are more reliable than page numbers when pagination varies.
- For Udolpho, ask how restricted knowledge and Montoni’s power make Emily’s danger feel prolonged.
- For Frankenstein, ask how Victor’s responsibility and failures shape what he fears and what follows.
- Compare how each kind of fear affects action: Emily must judge uncertain signs under constraint, while Victor faces consequences tied to his own choices.
The novels are literary works, not statistical studies; no numerical statistic is needed to support this comparison. Readers can check the argument against the 1794 and 1818 texts, keeping in mind that modern editions may differ in wording and pagination.
