Emma Watson’s route to playing Hermione began with an approach to her school: it was asked to put forward students interested in drama and auditioning. Watson later recalled that she was one of about 12 students considered from her school. After reading the book and deciding Hermione was a character she wanted to play, she went through several auditions and a screen test. The filmmakers have described the final choice as a combination of Watson’s individual performance and the chemistry among the young leads.
How Watson entered the casting search
In a 2025 account of her experience on Jay Shetty’s podcast, Watson said the casting search reached her school and asked it to submit students who liked drama and wanted to audition. She recalled being one of about 12 students put forward. That figure is her recollection of her school’s group, not an official count of candidates for the film. Watson had performed in school plays, including acting, dancing, and singing, but she had not acted professionally. The distinction matters: she was not entirely new to performance, even though the film became her first major professional screen role. Warner Bros. production notes
Why she wanted Hermione
After reading the book, Watson thought Hermione would be a great character to play. Her interest therefore began with the role itself, before the filmmakers made their decision. What the filmmakers were looking for
A strong fit for Hermione
Director Chris Columbus said Watson embodied Hermione. Co-producer Tanya Seghatchian recalled watching Watson’s screen test and wrote in her notebook, “Perfect! A trio that worked together
The casting decision was also about how the leads played together. Heyman said, “But it was all about casting the group.” Columbus described the on-screen chemistry among Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Watson as electric. Heyman also explained that the other roles were being considered alongside Harry, whom he called “the peak of the triangle”: the rest of the casting had to make sense around him. How many times did Emma Watson audition?
The available accounts establish that Watson went through several auditions and a screen test, but they do not establish one definitive number of audition rounds. The production notes say “a lot of auditions,” while Watson’s later recollection describes the school’s initial group, not a count of her own auditions. Specific totals sometimes repeated in later summaries should not be treated as settled without a direct, clearly sourced count.
