Emily Ratajkowski’s Hollywood breakthrough was a sequence, not a single shortcut: she had an early interest in acting and worked as a model before the 2013 “Blurred Lines” video brought her wider attention. That visibility preceded her audition for David Fincher’s Gone Girl, her first feature-film role, and further acting work in 2015.

Before her breakthrough, acting was already an ambition

Ratajkowski later described acting as her first interest. In a 2014 profile, GQ reported that she enrolled at UCLA intending to study painting, while modeling jobs grew and pulled her away from classes. She left after a year, according to that profile. This is an account of her early path from an interview and profile, not a complete or independently audited record of her education or acting work.

Modeling became part of that path while she was young; it did not mean Hollywood was her first goal. A 2014 ELLE Australia interview also records her saying that acting had initially interested her.

“Blurred Lines” brought the visibility that changed her prospects

Ratajkowski’s appearance in Robin Thicke’s 2013 “Blurred Lines” video made her broadly recognizable. Vogue later called the video her big break, while the Los Angeles Times wrote in 2015 that it jump-started her career. The video’s attention helps explain why she became widely known, but it does not establish that the video alone created her career or secured a film role.

How she got the Gone Girl role

The move into feature films followed quickly. In her 2014 account to ELLE Australia, Ratajkowski said she auditioned for David Fincher and Ben Affleck, then was offered the part two hours later. The Los Angeles Times identified Gone Girl as her first film role. She played Andie, Nick Dunne’s mistress.

The sequence matters: the video raised her profile; an audition gave her a specific opportunity; and Fincher’s film became her first feature credit. The available accounts support that timeline, not a claim that public attention by itself guaranteed casting.

She pursued more acting work after Gone Girl

By 2015, Ratajkowski had appeared in Entourage and was promoting We Are Your Friends. Vogue described the latter as her first leading role. In its interview, she discussed liking the character’s arc and wanting to avoid a simplistic stereotype. Those credits show how the initial film opportunity was followed by further roles, rather than serving as the end of her acting ambitions.

Her later view of the video became more complicated

In a 2023 Vogue interview, Ratajkowski reflected that her perspective on “Blurred Lines” had changed as she thought about power dynamics differently. “I changed my attitude around that because I thought about power dynamics in a different way,” she said. She also noted writing about the subject in her book My Body. This is her retrospective account of how her interpretation evolved; it should not be treated as an independent finding about disputed events on the video set.

Put together, the documented route is clear: an early acting interest and modeling work came before a high-profile music-video appearance; that exposure preceded her Gone Girl audition and first film role; and she continued into other acting credits. Her own later reflection adds that the meaning she attached to the breakthrough changed over time.
