Instead, it lets you set three Inquisition-era decisions, then builds its story around the choices BioWare says it can meaningfully reflect. Other decisions are not declared invalid or overwritten simply because this game leaves them unmentioned.
Why carrying every Dragon Age choice forward is difficult
The Dragon Age games let players make decisions that shape their own versions of Thedas. Over multiple entries, those decisions accumulate into a complex world state: a choice may affect a later character, political outcome or personal relationship, while another may have consequences far from the current story.
Dragon Age: Inquisition used Dragon Age Keep to select earlier decisions from Origins and Dragon Age II and bring them into the game. The Veilguard takes a narrower route: rather than importing a full world state through Keep, it asks players to choose three decisions from Inquisition during character creation. BioWare creative director John Epler described the approach in a September 2024 IGN interview.
Which Inquisition choices can you set?
During setup, players can recreate their Inquisitor and select these three decisions:

The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.
- The Inquisitor’s romance. The available choice depends on the Inquisitor’s gender and lineage, following restrictions used in Inquisition.
- Whether the Inquisition was disbanded.
- Whether the Inquisitor vowed to stop Solas or save him.
These selections give The Veilguard a limited set of specific past choices to work with. They are not a complete reconstruction of a player’s history across all three earlier games.
Why focus on only a few decisions?
Epler said BioWare chose decisions it believed it could respond to substantively, rather than include a long list that would lead mostly to cameos or brief acknowledgements. That is a design distinction: the game aims to give selected choices meaningful reactivity, not to mention every event in a player’s personal canon.

The setting also helps. The Veilguard takes place in Northern Thedas, while some earlier decisions have their most direct consequences in the South. Epler pointed to the example of who became Divine: it need not shape a story set far to the north in the same way it might a southern one. That explanation describes the narrative focus; it does not establish that the southern decision has ceased to matter in the wider fiction.
Does The Veilguard erase or canonize earlier choices?
BioWare’s stated approach is to avoid contradicting previous player choices where possible. Epler also said Dragon Age has no single official canon for those choices. A decision can remain true in an individual player’s story even when The Veilguard does not refer to it.

That makes an important distinction between reactivity and continuity. A game may not react directly to a past decision without declaring that decision wrong, reversing it or selecting one outcome as the official version. Epler described the series as having always left some earlier choices unaddressed in later titles.

The protagonist’s place in the world also changes the shape of the story. Epler contrasted the Inquisitor, who could become a politically powerful, chosen figure, with Rook, who must earn trust and standing. Rook is recruited to stop Solas’ ritual, keeping Solas central to the story while giving players a new protagonist to shape.

BioWare’s game overview describes a character-driven RPG set across regions including Rivain, Weisshaupt, Arlathan, Minrathous and the Deep Roads, with Warrior, Mage and Rogue classes and advanced specializations. EA announced the single-player game’s release for October 31, 2024, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in its launch announcement.
