Your encoder can send separate outputs directly to each platform, or send one stream to a cloud relay that forwards it to your selected destinations. The main trade-off is control and local upload capacity versus simpler distribution through an additional service.
What happens to the video signal?
A camera, screen, game, and audio sources are combined by an encoder into a streamable signal. Twitch describes an encoder sending video over the internet to its service using RTMP; YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. The exact protocol, ingest address, and settings depend on the destination, so use each platform’s current documentation.
Local multistreaming: the encoder sends to each platform
In a local setup, encoder software or hardware sends an output to each platform’s ingest destination. You configure each destination and the encoder delivers the outputs from your location. Depending on how the encoder handles them, multiple outputs can require more processing or additional configuration.
Cloud multistreaming: a relay distributes one incoming stream
With a cloud relay, your encoder sends one stream to a service, which forwards it to the platforms you select. YouTube describes this as a cloud service receiving one high-quality stream and distributing it to chosen channels, resolutions, or platforms. This reduces the number of independent outputs you need to send from your own connection, but adds a network hop and makes the service’s destination support, limits, and terms relevant.

How the two approaches compare

How much upload speed does multistreaming need?
For local outputs, add the target bitrates. For example, YouTube’s guidance uses a 6 Mbps output plus a 4 Mbps output, for a combined target of 10 Mbps. YouTube advises aiming for 1.5 to 2 times the combined target upload speed for stability, which makes 15–20 Mbps the target range in that example. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every connection or production.
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate intended for each platform.
- Add the bitrates of the local outputs to estimate the required outbound capacity.
- Leave headroom above that total. YouTube’s example guidance suggests 1.5–2 times the combined bitrate.
- Run a speed test under realistic conditions, with typical audio and video movement, and test the stream before the event.
A cloud relay changes the broadcaster-side calculation because the creator sends one incoming feed rather than a separate outbound feed to every destination. Restream’s help center advises a minimum bandwidth of 10 Mbps and recommends 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD, for its service. Those figures are Restream’s service guidance, not universal multistreaming requirements; check the requirements of the relay you choose.

Multistreaming is not the same as transcoding
Multistreaming means sending the same program to multiple platforms. Transcoding means turning one source feed into several versions, often with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates, so viewers can select a version suited to their device or connection. OBS Project notes that whether those quality options are available depends on the destination platform. A relay may offer related options, but availability varies by service and plan; do not assume that sending to several platforms automatically creates multiple quality versions on each.
Destination setup and platform rules
Prepare accounts and stream destinations
- Confirm that every account is eligible to go live and that live streaming is enabled. YouTube says a channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the request.
- Collect each destination’s server or ingest URL and stream key, unless your encoder or service handles destination setup for you. Treat stream keys as credentials and do not share them publicly.
- Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol for each destination using that platform’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test where available, check audio and video at every destination, and confirm that the stream remains stable before relying on it for a live event.
Check each platform’s policies
Multistreaming does not waive a platform’s eligibility, content, or conduct rules. Twitch allows simulcasting under its guidelines, but says the Twitch experience must not be degraded and restricts directing Twitch viewers to another live stream in specified ways. Check the current Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ and any agreement that affects your eligibility. Rules and technical requirements can change.

Which method should you choose?
- Choose local outputs if you want direct control over separate platform configurations and your computer and connection can handle the required outputs.
- Consider a cloud relay if you want to send one feed from your setup and simplify distribution, or if local resources are constrained. Check the relay’s supported destinations, plan limits, latency, and terms before going live.
These methods concern a live program sent to multiple platforms. If your goal instead is to keep a pre-recorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, that is a different workflow.
