Despite early reports describing a scuba-diving accident, later reporting clarified that he was swimming. On 25 March 2026, Singapore State Coroner Adam Nakhoda ruled that Garg died from accidental drowning and found no evidence of foul play.
Did Zubeen Garg die while scuba diving?
No. Early accounts described a scuba-diving accident, but a report published on 1 October 2025 clarified that Garg had been swimming, not scuba diving. The later coroner’s inquiry and final ruling described a swimming incident and accidental drowning. The Straits Times reported the correction.
How did Zubeen Garg die?
Garg was in Singapore for the North East India Festival and was due to perform the next day. On 19 September 2025, he joined about 20 people on a yacht outing involving activities that included drinking alcohol, swimming and kayaking. While swimming back toward the yacht, he became unresponsive. Others brought him aboard and performed CPR. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead; the autopsy determined that he had drowned. Channel NewsAsia reported the inquiry evidence.
What the inquiry heard about the swim
According to the evidence reported during the coroner’s inquiry, Garg wore a life jacket for his first swim, then removed it. Before a second swim, he declined another life jacket. The court heard that he became unresponsive while returning to the yacht.

Inquiry reporting said toxicology found 333 mg of ethanol per 100 ml of blood. Channel NewsAsia reported that Singapore’s legal limit is 80 mg per 100 ml; that limit is context, not a separate measurement of Garg’s condition. The coroner said intoxication likely impaired Garg’s judgment, including his decisions about wearing a life jacket. These are findings and evidence reported from the inquiry, not an independent medical assessment.
What did the Singapore coroner rule?
On 25 March 2026, State Coroner Adam Nakhoda ruled Garg’s death an accidental drowning. He found no evidence of foul play and said no one had forced, coerced or pushed Garg into the water. The coroner described the death as “simply due to an unfortunate and tragic accidental drowning.” Channel NewsAsia’s account of the ruling gives further details.

The inquiry considered Garg’s history of epilepsy. The coroner said it was possible that he had a seizure before drowning, but the evidence was inconclusive; the inquiry did not establish a seizure as the cause of death.
The coroner’s court examined the cause and circumstances of death. It did not determine whether any criminal offences had been committed; the coroner said that is a matter for police and prosecutors.

Yes. On 1 April 2026, Singapore Police said their investigation had concluded consistently with the coroner’s ruling. Channel NewsAsia reported the police conclusion.
An earlier police statement dated 17 October 2025 described the investigation as ongoing and urged the public not to speculate. That was a preliminary update, issued months before the inquiry and final ruling; it is not the latest status. The Singapore Police Force published that October statement.
