Jelly Roll began writing rap as a child, then carried his music to listeners through teen mixtapes and independent promotion. The year 2011 marks a professional milestone in his rap career—not the beginning of his interest in making music.
He started writing rap as a child
Jelly Roll has recalled writing his first rap when he was about 10, 11, or 12, then sharing it with his family right away in a GRAMMY.com interview. Biography.com places the memory at about age 9 or 10. The estimates differ slightly, so the safest conclusion is that he began writing in childhood, rather than assigning the event an exact age.

He moved from writing songs to distributing mixtapes
Teenage mixtapes
According to Biography.com, by eighth grade he was passing out mixtapes in a high school parking lot. That was an early form of reaching listeners directly, before the professional milestone later associated with his career.
Independent promotion
An iHeart artist profile published January 24, 2022, says he sold mixtapes from his car. In that profile, he described his strategy this way: “So I wanted to tour like a Rock n’ Roll act, but release music like a rapper.” The approach paired direct distribution with a performance-minded ambition, rather than depending on a single formal launch.

Why 2011 is often treated as his career starting point
GRAMMY.com dates the start of Jelly Roll’s music career as a rapper to 2011. Biography.com provides a related account: after his release from prison, a YouTube freestyle drew the attention of rapper Lil Wyte and led to a collaboration on the 2011 album Year Round. Those accounts make 2011 a useful professional milestone, distinct from his childhood songwriting and teen mixtape activity.
The sources do not establish the exact title or release date of Jelly Roll’s first recording or mixtape. It is therefore more accurate to describe a progression—from early writing to self-distributed music and then a documented collaboration—than to claim one precise first release.

His shift toward singing came later
Jelly Roll has said he always loved country music, but did not realize he could sing until a producer encouraged him after hearing him at karaoke. He recalled discovering his voice in his mid-thirties. His later move toward singing and country therefore followed years of making rap, rather than defining how he first entered music.
In the same GRAMMY.com interview, he described that evolution: “The songwriting and everything, the music evolved. The way I say it is, the music followed the man: the man changed and then the music changed, this big old lug of human ions has just been dragging the music along with me, wherever I’ve ended up at the mic.”
