On July 26, 1984, United Press International reported that Gein died at Mendota at 7:45 a.m. The next day, a UPI follow-up said officials at the institution reported he had also been suffering from cancer. These are contemporary news accounts, not a medical record.
What was the reported cause of death?
UPI described the cause as a respiratory ailment in its July 26 report and as respiratory failure in its July 27 follow-up. The follow-up also reported cancer. The accounts do not specify the cancer type or establish the full medical chain that led to his death.

#1 Best Overall
Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services explains that an extended death certificate may include cause and manner of death, but Gein’s certificate is not among the sources cited here. Accordingly, the most precise supported wording is that contemporary reports attributed his death to a respiratory illness or failure and said he had also been suffering from cancer.
Where did Ed Gein die?
Gein died at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Historical Society says he remained at the institution after his 1968 trial. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services describes Mendota as a state-operated mental health facility; its present-day description should not be taken as a detailed account of the institute’s operations in 1984.
Rank #2
What is known—and not known—about his final days?
The accounts establish his date and place of death, the reported time, and the broad medical descriptions given by contemporary reporters. They do not provide a detailed account of the final days, a treatment history, or a primary clinical record. More specific claims about his diagnosis or care are not established by these sources.
The Historical Society entry also reproduces Judge Gollmar’s description of Gein as “A mild, meek appearing little man; no one suspected him of murder until a number of people disappeared.” The Society attributes the passage to Gollmar’s book Tales of a Country Judge; it is a historical recollection, not a clinical assessment.
