Dick Hallorann connects It: Welcome to Derry to Stephen King’s The Shining through the same psychic ability: the shine. King’s novel It already places Hallorann in Derry’s Black Spot history, where he uses that gift to help people escape a fire. The series expands that brief link into a substantial part of his younger life, while following the continuity of the It films rather than reproducing every detail of the novel’s timeline.
How Hallorann links the stories
In The Shining, Hallorann is the Overlook Hotel’s cook. He recognizes that Danny Torrance has a psychic ability like his own and gives Danny a name for it: the shine. King’s It connects Hallorann to Derry through the Black Spot, a Black community club targeted by a racist mob and set on fire. In the novel’s account, Hallorann’s shine helps him understand how people can get out.

That makes Hallorann more than a new crossover devised for television. King had already placed the character in both stories; Welcome to Derry turns the short Black Spot reference into a major strand of his backstory. The series lets viewers see an earlier, less settled Hallorann than the man Danny meets at the Overlook.
What Hallorann’s “gift” means
The shine is a psychic ability shared by Hallorann and Danny. In descriptions of the story, it includes perceiving ghosts, communicating telepathically, and having clairvoyant impressions. It is best understood here as a flexible fictional gift, not a power with a complete, consistently explained rulebook.

In the series, Hallorann is a younger airman drawn into a secret military project focused on Derry and It. Andy Muschietti has described Hallorann as having used his shine to cheat at poker and being caught by the military, providing a reason for his involvement in the mission. This version gives the ability a role in the plot beyond the recognition and guidance Hallorann offers Danny in The Shining.
What changes between the book and the series
The important distinction is continuity. The Television Academy describes the series as beginning in 1962, 27 years before the events of the first It film. TIME reports that the series follows the timeline established by the two It film adaptations, not the novel’s chronology. In the book, Hallorann’s Derry connection is associated with Will Hanlon; the adaptation shifts the overlap to Leroy Hanlon and places it about 30 years later.

Those differences mean the show should not be treated as a scene-for-scene extension of every Stephen King book detail, or as proof that the novels, Kubrick’s The Shining film, and the It adaptations form one fully identical continuity. The supported connection is specific: the series adapts a character and backstory already linked in King’s writing, but reshapes the dates and family context for its screen timeline.
Why make Hallorann central to the prequel?
Muschietti has explained that Hallorann’s familiar later life left room to explore who he was before the Overlook. “We know so much about Dick Hallorann from The Shining, but that is a Dick Hallorann that is in the last few years of his life,” he told the Television Academy. He described Derry as an opportunity to show that Hallorann “might have been very different in his younger years,” and to depict a transformation whose endpoint viewers already know.

The Black Spot made that expansion especially apt. As Muschietti told SYFY WIRE, King’s second interlude in It specifically says Hallorann was there and used his shine to save people. A passing piece of backstory could therefore become a dramatic storyline without inventing an unrelated reason for Hallorann to be in Derry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where to see the connection in the stories
- It: Look for the Black Spot account, where Hallorann’s presence links his gift to Derry’s history.
- The Shining: Hallorann’s conversation with Danny establishes the shine and their shared ability.
- It: Welcome to Derry: The series expands Hallorann’s earlier Derry period, using the film adaptations’ chronology rather than the novel’s exact dates.
For readers following the character beyond these connections, Doctor Sleep is a later story featuring Hallorann, but it is not needed to understand why he belongs in the Derry prequel.
