Common says the turning point in his relationship with his daughter, Omoye, came when he listened to her describe how she had experienced his absence while growing up. He had believed he was doing a good job as a father; hearing her perspective made him reconsider what she needed. In interviews in 2019, he described the conversations, a joint therapy session, and a music video they made together as parts of their effort to reconnect—not as a quick fix or a guarantee of lasting reconciliation.
What Omoye told Common
In a May 2019 interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, Common said he had missed some of Omoye’s formative years while he was busy working. He recalled believing he was doing well as a father: “I believe that I was doing a good job, right? I was doing a good job.”

That view changed when Omoye told him she felt he had not tried hard enough to be part of her life. Common said he initially became defensive. Rather than treating his intentions or what he thought he had provided as the whole story, he tried to listen to how she had experienced their relationship.
He said her account prompted him to ask, “what’s the best way for me to love her right now?” Common connected that question to the writing of his memoir, Let Love Have the Last Word. ABC News’ interview with Common gives his account of the conversation and its impact.

Why listening mattered to him
In a 2019 conversation with PBS’s Amanpour & Company, Common described the relationship as a lesson in practicing love. He said he could believe he was doing the right things while his daughter experienced the relationship differently. His takeaway was that he had to honor her perspective, not simply defend his own intentions.
“If that other individual, who happens to be my daughter, is not receiving that in that way, then I have to honor that,” he said. The distinction is central to his account: listening meant taking seriously the effect of his choices on Omoye, even when that differed from what he believed he had done. PBS has the interview and transcript.

How making a music video gave them time together
In October 2019, Common spoke about filming the “Show Me That You Love Me” video with Omoye during an appearance on The View. He said the movement in the video drew on their relationship and that working on it created time for them to be together in an unusual way.
Common described the conversations around the process as healing, saying “there was a lot of healing that took place within our conversations.” He presented the video as a creative experience that helped them connect and talk—not as a cure on its own. ABC News’ account of the video reports his description.

What the 2019 therapy account establishes
A 2019 secondary report about Common’s appearance on Red Table Talk says he acknowledged that he “didn’t fight” hard enough as a father and needed to listen. It also reports that he and Omoye had a therapy session together and that Common said they were doing well overall at that time. The report summarizes that appearance.
That is a dated account of what Common said in 2019, not independent confirmation of the family’s private relationship now. His interviews describe steps he said helped them move toward understanding; they do not establish their present-day circumstances.
