Colin Cowherd launched The Volume with iHeartMedia on February 1, 2021, as a network of sports-talk shows. Jamie Horowitz offered early advice on its content and hiring direction; Shannon Sharpe and Draymond Green later represented the high-profile host talent associated with its portfolio. The story is one of building a talent-led media network—not evidence that any individual controls its future or that its reach guarantees commercial success.

What is The Volume podcast network?

The Volume is a sports podcast and video network founded by Cowherd in partnership with iHeartMedia. Its February 2021 launch announcement described a co-produced network with an initial slate of five shows, extending the relationship around Cowherd’s existing sports content. The announcement quoted iHeartPodcast Network president Conal Byrne saying the partnership would build on the success of The Herd Podcast Network. Premiere Networks/iHeartMedia’s launch announcement also named FanDuel as presenting sponsor at launch.

The model was a slate, rather than one program: recognizable hosts could anchor distinct shows under a shared network identity. That structure put Cowherd’s experience and profile at its center while leaving room for other sports voices and formats.

Who helped Colin Cowherd build The Volume?

Colin Cowherd: founder and launch partner

Cowherd founded The Volume and partnered with iHeartMedia to launch it. In the launch announcement, he said, “There has never been a more exciting time to develop new sports content.” That was a contemporaneous statement about the opportunity in 2021, not a forecast of the company’s later performance.

Jamie Horowitz: early adviser, not the founder

Horowitz’s official biography says Cowherd sought his guidance while launching The Volume and credits that early counsel with helping shape the network’s content and hiring direction. Horowitz brought experience from an earlier Fox Sports role, where he recruited talent for programs including The Herd with Colin Cowherd and Undisputed, featuring Shannon Sharpe. Those are distinct parts of his career: talent recruitment at Fox came before his advisory contribution to The Volume. His biography is the source for the account of that counsel. Read Horowitz’s biography.

How do Shannon Sharpe and Draymond Green fit in?

Sharpe and Green are examples of the prominent personalities associated with The Volume’s talent-led roster, not interchangeable with Cowherd or Horowitz in their roles. Cowherd is the founder and launch partner; Horowitz advised on early direction; Sharpe and Green are hosts whose names and voices helped define shows in the network’s portfolio.

Sports Business Journal’s October 23, 2023 profile described an 18-show roster at that time and included Sharpe and Green among its hosts. That is a dated snapshot, not a current count. The publication quoted then-head of content Logan Swaim describing the underlying format: “Can you hold a conversation directly with one other person and grab their attention just by talking?” Sports Business Journal’s 2023 profile.
