What Brinkley said happened
In trial testimony reported by ABC News, Brinkley said Bianchi’s stepfather, described in the coverage as a police officer, told her about the affair after the Southampton speech. The disclosure, as Brinkley described it, is the clearest answer to how she found out.
Brinkley also testified that, in spring 2006, she visited one of her properties and found signs that Cook and Bianchi had been there. That was a separate detail in her account; the trial coverage does not establish it as the moment she learned of the affair. ABC News reported Brinkley’s testimony during the 2008 divorce trial.
What Cook said about the affair
In an interview with Barbara Walters reported by ABC News in October 2008, Cook gave his own explanation for pursuing the relationship: “I was seeking a connection I could not find in my own marriage.” That was Cook’s stated perspective, not Brinkley’s explanation or an independently established cause. How the story became public
The account Brinkley gave of the disclosure dates to 2006; the affair and the couple’s breakup then became part of public divorce proceedings in 2008. The available contemporaneous coverage supports that sequence, while the details above remain attributed to what Brinkley and Cook said.
