China’s viral “cat and mouse” game is outdoor hide-and-seek played with live location sharing: hiders scatter through a bounded public area while seekers use a group map to track them down. In the version described by MIT Technology Review in 2023, most players began as mice, received a five-minute head start, and joined the cats’ team if caught.
How a round works
The game combines a familiar chase with a shared map. Players meet in an agreed public area, divide into hiders (“mice”) and seekers (“cats”), and share their locations through a group map rather than relying on a dedicated game platform.
The reported rules
One common format described by MIT Technology Review starts with 90% of players as mice and 10% as cats. The mice get five minutes to hide before the cats begin searching. When a mouse is caught, that player switches sides and helps the cats find whoever remains. Organizers can change the role balance, head start, boundaries, and other rules, so these figures describe one reported ruleset—not a universal standard.
The map and the playing area
In the 2023 coverage, players commonly used Alibaba’s Amap, also known as Gaode Maps, to join a group and share locations in real time. The report said Amap had added game-oriented group features, including larger groups, random role assignment, customizable rules, and some automated role changes. Those are features reported at the time; current app behavior is not established here, and the game does not inherently require Amap.

The reporter joined a game with about 40 strangers in a public park on the former Kowloon Walled City site in Hong Kong. Participants wore neon wristbands to help bystanders distinguish them from other park visitors. The wristbands were an identification aid, not a required piece of game equipment.
What makes the format different from ordinary hide-and-seek
A live map changes the balance between hiding and searching. Hiders still need to choose routes and places to wait, but their shared locations give seekers a digital trail to follow. As caught mice become cats, the seeking team grows while the pool of hiders shrinks.

The boundaries and location-sharing rules matter as much as the role split. A small park, a larger public space, frequent location updates, and a longer head start can each produce a different pace. Those are organizer decisions rather than fixed rules of a standardized game.
Why the game spread
MIT Technology Review linked the game’s appeal to physical activity, playful competition, and the chance to meet people. Its participants included students and young professionals; some joined partly to make friends. Dramatic hiding and chasing also made the rounds easy to share as short social-media videos, while the map gave newcomers a simple mechanic to understand.

- BUILDS DEDUCTION & SHAPE RECOGNITION TOGETHER — Hide and Goat Seek develops the logical deduction, shape recognition, and spatial orientation skills that prepare children for mathematical and scientific thinking. Each goat has a unique base shape — and not every goat fits under every piece of furniture. Children must deduce which shape goes where before placing anything. Thinking first. Playing second.
- DESIGNED FOR AGES 3–7, WITH SHAPE LOGIC THAT GROWS — Starter challenges show children which goats to place and guide them to their spots — perfect for age 3. As difficulty climbs, children must use the shapes of the goats themselves as the only clue — pure deductive reasoning, no colour guidance. One game that scales from first logic steps to genuine independent problem-solving across four years.
- HELP THE GOATS HIDE — BEFORE THE WOLF ARRIVES — Read the storybook together, then set up the board. Place the furniture pieces on the board as shown, then figure out which of the seven goats fits safely under which piece of furniture. Here's the twist: each goat has a unique base shape, and only the right shape fits under each piece. Triangles can sometimes surprise you — but squares will never fit a circular hole. Deduce the right arrangement. One solution. Every time.
- A FAIRY TALE GIFT WORTH EXPLORING — With seven individual goat characters, a charming wolf, five furniture pieces, and a beautiful Brothers Grimm storybook, Hide and Goat Seek is one of the most visually rich gifts in the SmartGames preschool line. Screen-free, storybook-included, and designed for independent play — a confident choice for birthdays, holidays, and thoughtful gifts from grandparents who want to give something that's both beautiful and genuinely challenging.
- AWARD-WINNING BELGIAN DESIGN — SmartGames is the worldwide leader in multi-level logic games, with 30+ years of educational game design from Belgium, trusted by educators and families in 80+ countries. Hide and Goat Seek is built to the same standard: premium durable materials, a single elegant solution per challenge, and a free companion app with hints, animated clues, and the full illustrated storybook.
The article reported that the trend emerged in February 2023 and that events were being held weekly around China. It also cited broad claims about large event turnouts and millions of video views. These are historical estimates reported in 2023, not independently audited or current measurements. One participant told the article that the largest game they had joined included more than 140 people; that account should not be confused with a verified record.
What organizers can learn from the reported games
Anyone adapting the idea for a local group needs clear boundaries and rules before play starts. In a public place, participants should also be identifiable to people who are not playing. The Hong Kong event’s neon wristbands show one low-tech way to do that, but no particular product is required.

The 2023 article also described some local events charging a modest fee, typically under US$10, and one group that paired games with activities such as camping, board games, and barbecues. Those examples show how some communities expanded the social side of the activity; they do not establish current prices or a single event network.

The coverage portrays a fast-moving social trend, not a formally standardized sport or a measured nationwide participation count. Figures such as weekly events, thousands of attendees, and millions of video views belong to the article’s reporting in 2023. They establish how the phenomenon was described at that time, not how many people play today.
