Cheryl Bartlett Fann survived a 1981 attack in Toledo after she was shot in the back and the gun failed to fire again. In her account, she and her fiancé, Bud Coates, escaped the attackers’ immediate control, reached nearby homes for help, and Fann was taken to hospital. Her story is a survivor’s recollection, as published by People and syndicated by Yahoo News in 2024—not a claim that the shooting was medically assessed as certain to be fatal.
What happened to Cheryl Bartlett Fann?
Fann’s account places the attack on January 27, 1981, in Toledo, Ohio. She was 18 and had walked to the grocery store where her fiancé, Bud Coates, worked, hoping to surprise him after his shift. As they walked home together, Anthony and Nathaniel Cook attacked them, according to Fann’s account in a 2024 People feature syndicated by Yahoo News.
Fann said she sensed danger before seeing Anthony approach. She and Coates offered valuables, including her ring set and his wallet. The men made them cover their faces with ski masks and took them to a garage. Fann said the brothers sexually assaulted her, then made her stand and get dressed. They had Coates hold her tightly while they shot her in the back.
How did she escape?
Fann recalled hearing the gun click without another shot. The brothers ran away, leaving Fann and Coates able to seek help. They went to nearby homes and asked for assistance. Fann said she lost consciousness before rescue personnel took her to hospital.

The reported sequence explains how she survived the immediate attack: the gun did not fire again, the attackers fled, and she and Coates reached people who could summon help. The account does not establish why the gun clicked or offer a medical assessment of the shot’s likely outcome.
What injuries and recovery did she describe?
The People feature reports, based on Fann’s account, that she spent three and a half weeks in hospital and underwent more than 20 surgeries because the bullet broke apart. Those figures describe her personal history as reported in the feature; they are not independently verified medical-record details or general statistics.

How did the attack affect her life afterward?
Fann described serious effects on her relationship with Coates and on later relationships. She said Coates left, and that she struggled with anger and pushed people away. She later moved from Ohio to Tennessee and married Danny Fann. She described her husband as supportive because he listened without criticizing her. These are her own reflections, not a clinical diagnosis.
What happened to the Cook brothers?
According to the 2024 feature, Fann’s description of the attackers did not lead to their conviction at the time. The article reports that Anthony Cook was convicted in 1982 of killing businessman Peter Sawicki, and that Nathaniel Cook was arrested in 1998 in connection with Thomas Gordon’s murder. It says the brothers later confessed to additional murders in a plea agreement: Anthony to eight murders between 1971 and 1983, and Nathaniel to three. The feature also reports that Nathaniel was released on parole in 2018. These are legal-history claims reported by a secondary source; the account cited here does not independently establish further case details.
What became of Fann’s rings?
Fann said the attackers took her engagement and wedding rings, which she never recovered. She said she would like to give them to her son. The cited account does not establish where the rings went or whether they could be recovered.
