Gaming in 2025 was not a simple contest between big-budget blockbusters and indie games. Established franchises, independently published titles, and social platforms all competed for players’ time—and increasingly overlapped. Company reports and a developer survey show how platforms supported creation and play, while industry analysis highlights the high costs and long monetization horizons behind major releases. These figures illuminate parts of the landscape; they are not a complete, audited measure of the global game market.
What changed in gaming in 2025?
The clearest shift was not that one kind of game displaced another. Rather, games reached audiences through more varied routes: premium franchise releases, independent publishing, and platform-based experiences where people can play, create, and socialize. A blockbuster may rely on an established audience and years of follow-on spending; an indie team may publish directly to a storefront; a platform such as Roblox can make player-created games part of the product.
Those models coexist, but the evidence about them measures different things. Deloitte’s analysis, published via VentureBeat, offers an industry argument about blockbuster economics. Roblox and Epic report activity on their own platforms. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) reports what survey respondents are building for. None of those sources alone establishes how the entire industry performed.
Why do blockbusters still matter?
Deloitte’s 2025 analysis describes major franchises as businesses built around expensive production and extended opportunities to earn revenue. A game may bring in money from its initial sale, then continue through subscriptions, in-game purchases, advertising, virtual goods, or franchise partnerships. That long tail can make an established series attractive to publishers even when the initial investment is high.

- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Familiarity can also help a game hold a community. Deloitte argues that when friends already play together in a large multiplayer title, it can be difficult for a newcomer to persuade the whole group to move. That is a social advantage as well as a commercial one: players are choosing not just a game, but often a place where their friends already meet.
Deloitte’s discussion of the 2025 release slate, possible console activity, industry consolidation, and changing willingness to pay should be read as forward-looking analysis, not proof that those expectations came to pass. The available evidence here does not establish year-end sales for particular blockbuster releases.
How have indie creators found routes to players?
Independent developers can publish without relying on a traditional large publisher. The Global State of Game Publishing and Marketing 2025 Industry Report names Steam, itch.io, the Epic Games Store, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), and Roblox as routes small teams can use. Depending on the platform and game, developers may sell a standalone title, build within an existing ecosystem, or use a mix of distribution and in-game monetization.

That access does not guarantee an audience. The publishing report identifies standing out as an ongoing challenge, while Deloitte points to funding and the cost of acquiring players as constraints for indie creators. A storefront can make a game available; it cannot ensure that players find it, that marketing costs are affordable, or that development can be financed.

Epic’s 2025 year-in-review said developers received 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product per year on the Epic Games Store before its standard 88/12 split applied. That is a store-specific term reported by Epic, not a general rule for indie publishing; commercial terms can change.
What do platform figures reveal about creation and play?
Roblox and Epic illustrate how a platform can be more than a place to buy or launch games: it can also host creator activity, discovery, and social play. Their reported figures are useful examples, but the companies define and measure their own platform activity. They should not be treated as directly comparable market totals.

Roblox: creator earnings across two reporting periods
Roblox’s 2025 Annual Economic Impact Report said creators earned more than $1 billion globally through its DevEx program from March 2024 to March 2025, an increase of more than 31% year over year. Roblox noted that this period ended before the breakout of Grow a Garden and related second-quarter 2025 records.
A later Roblox report, The Global Impact of Creation on Roblox (2026), put creator earnings for calendar year 2025 above $1.5 billion, compared with $923 million in 2024. The reports describe different periods and reporting contexts. They are separate Roblox figures—not amounts to add together—and do not represent creator earnings across the wider game industry.

Epic said total gameplay hours declined year over year even as hours spent on third-party titles rose 4%. The distinction matters: growth in playtime for third-party games did not mean total store hours also grew. All of these are Epic’s store metrics, not measures of the whole PC market.
Epic also described text chat across Fortnite, its mobile apps, and the launcher. Community spaces, profiles, and other social features were presented as plans for 2026 in the year-in-review, not as features already completed across those products.

GDC’s 2025 State of the Game Industry survey asked respondents which platforms they were currently making games for. These percentages describe survey responses—not player numbers, platform sales, or revenue shares. Respondents could be developing for more than one platform.

GDC reported that browser development was up from 9% in the prior year and at its highest level in a decade. The survey did not list Steam separately as a platform. That distinction is important: the 80% PC figure cannot be read as a Steam development share.
On engine choice, 32% of respondents named Unity and 32% named Unreal as the primary engine for their current game. Those figures show an even split among the survey responses reported; they do not establish the engines’ shares of all games released or sold in 2025.
What do these trends mean for players and creators?
For players, choice is shaped by more than a game’s budget. A major franchise can offer a familiar series and an established multiplayer community; an indie release can reach players through self-publishing; and a platform experience can make social connection or user-created content central to play. The examples from Roblox and Epic show platforms investing in ecosystems around games, not just distribution.
For creators, reaching a platform is only one part of the decision. A route that provides access to an existing audience may also mean dependence on that platform’s discovery systems, policies, and payout rules. A more independent publishing path may offer different kinds of control, but still leaves a team to find players and fund its work. The practical trade-offs include:
- Reach and discovery: whether players already use the platform, and how they might find or share a game.
- Creator economics: payout eligibility, revenue splits, in-game monetization, and who sets prices.
- Control: how much the creator can manage publishing, customer relationships, and platform dependence.
- Community: whether a game can build its own social audience or connect with an existing one.
- Production and marketing: the financing, team capacity, and promotional effort needed to finish a game and make it visible.
Why this is not simply an “AAA versus indie” story
The 2025 picture is better understood as several models operating at once. Blockbusters can draw on franchise recognition and extended monetization; self-publishing gives smaller teams more ways to reach platforms; and creator ecosystems can turn platforms into places to make and share games as well as play them. Each model faces different constraints, and none of the cited figures proves that one is replacing the others.
The evidence has limits: GDC’s numbers represent developer survey responses, while Roblox and Epic report their own platform activity. Deloitte’s analysis includes forecasts and industry arguments rather than verified sales outcomes for the year. Taken together, the sources describe a more varied set of routes to making, distributing, and playing games—not a single winner or a comprehensive market tally.
