Balerion was the largest Targaryen dragon in the book-based account; Vhagar became the largest living dragon after his death and was approaching his size by 129 AC. In the television comparison, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal described Vhagar as many times bigger than Drogon. These are qualitative comparisons, not a consistent set of exact measurements for all three.
Vhagar compared with Balerion
In the book-based chronology summarized by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, Balerion is described as the oldest and largest Targaryen dragon. He died in 94 AC. Vhagar then became the largest living dragon, and by 129 AC she was approaching Balerion’s size.
“Approaching” indicates that Vhagar came close; it does not establish that she matched Balerion, or give a percentage, length, or wingspan for either dragon. The source does not provide a corroborated exact dimension for this comparison.
Vhagar compared with Drogon
For the television comparison, The Digital Fix reports showrunner Ryan Condal describing Vhagar as “many times bigger than Drogon was,” while noting that Drogon was already huge. The statement supports a clear qualitative answer: in that production comparison, Vhagar is much larger than the Game of Thrones version of Drogon.

The same 2023 report attributes a length of 150 meters to Vhagar to visual effects producer Nikeah Forde. That is a production figure reported secondhand, not part of a consistent, published measurement set for Vhagar, Balerion, and Drogon. It should not be used to calculate a precise ratio between the dragons.
Why the published figures do not make a three-way size chart
The figures and descriptions available refer to different continuities and measurement contexts. A book passage about Drogon’s wingspan cannot be directly compared with a television production estimate for Vhagar or a book-based ranking of Balerion and Vhagar.

| Dragon | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Balerion | Book-based lore describes him as the oldest and largest Targaryen dragon; he died in 94 AC, according to A Wiki of Ice and Fire. | A corroborated exact length or wingspan. |
| Vhagar | She was the largest living dragon after Balerion’s death and was approaching his size by 129 AC, according to A Wiki of Ice and Fire. A 2023 The Digital Fix report attributes a 150-meter length to production staff. | An exact book-based size ratio to Balerion or a directly comparable measurement across all three dragons. |
| Drogon | A particular book passage gives his wingspan as 20 feet and describes it as three times his body length, as summarized by A Wiki of Ice and Fire. | A universal dimension for every point in the story, a television measurement, or a direct comparison with Vhagar and Balerion. |
George R. R. Martin’s comments on the House of the Dragon dragon designs offer context rather than measurements: he said they needed very large wings and relatively slender, serpentine bodies, with long tails and necks. Entertainment Tonight reported his remarks on December 12, 2022. Differences in design and depiction are another reason not to infer a precise size ratio from appearances alone.

Unofficial charts, including Compare Dragons’ Vhagar–Balerion comparison, may offer convenient visual estimates. The cited lore and production reporting do not corroborate those figures as canonical measurements made using one shared method. Treat them as fan estimates, not official dimensions.
