What happened in the Jennifer Incident?
The series’ timeline places the incident in 2006, during a mission in Moldova. Ben discovers a young girl, Jennifer, inside a crate. When they touch hands, a dangerous reaction follows. Reginald shoots them both before anything further happens.

Afterward, the siblings’ memories of the incident are suppressed. They are left with guilt they cannot fully explain, while the truth about Ben’s death remains hidden from them.
Why did Reginald kill Ben and Jennifer?
Reginald believes that Ben and Jennifer cannot be allowed to come together: the show connects what is inside them to a catastrophe. In the present-day storyline, he again tries to keep them apart.

Season 4 gives that danger a mechanism within the show’s fictional cosmology. Ben’s body contains Marigold, while Jennifer’s contains Durango. Series creator and showrunner Steve Blackman explains that the substances cancel each other out when they meet, setting the Cleanse in motion. This is the series’ supernatural explanation, not a real-world scientific claim. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 explanation attributes this account to Blackman.
How did the show foreshadow Jennifer?
Jennifer is not introduced without warning. Blackman says references were planted across earlier seasons, including her name among visual clues in Ben’s room and drawings that foreshadow Ben’s connection to her. He describes Ben as being drawn toward Jennifer across timelines. Blackman discusses those clues in Netflix Tudum’s interview.

Is this also the explanation in The Umbrella Academy comics?
No. Blackman says the Jennifer Incident was a mystery in the graphic novels and that the television version is his interpretation. He has said Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá plan to take the story in a different direction in the comics. So the show’s Marigold-and-Durango explanation should not be treated as the definitive comic-book account. Netflix Tudum’s Aug. 8, 2024 interview with Blackman covers the distinction.
