Bad Bunny says he got his stage name from a childhood school photo: he was dressed as a bunny and looked annoyed. His real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio. He has also explained that he chose “Bad Bunny” because it could work as a distinctive character or brand—and, he later said, as a memorable name for his music.
The childhood photo behind the name
In an Entertainment Tonight interview published October 11, 2018, Bad Bunny described seeing a school picture of himself dressed as a bunny with an annoyed expression. He said: “When I was a little boy in school I had to dress up as a bunny and there’s a picture of me with an annoyed face, and when I saw it, I thought I should name myself ‘Bad Bunny.’”

Telemundo’s Spanish-language report published March 11, 2022 likewise describes bunny ears and an unfriendly expression. It connects the anecdote to a 2016 interview on the Urban Car Pool Show, when he was beginning his music career. The photo story comes from Bad Bunny’s own account, as relayed in these interviews; it is not an independently verified account of the photograph.
Why he kept “Bad Bunny” as his stage name
A distinctive character or brand
In the 2016 interview quoted by Telemundo, Bad Bunny described the idea as a way to create a distinctive persona. Telemundo quotes him in Spanish: “Es un personaje o una marca. El conejo malo o malvado, como la gente quiera decirle.” The meaning is: “It’s a character or a brand. The bad or evil bunny, however people want to call it.”

A name people might remember
In ET’s 2018 interview, he emphasized marketability and recall: “It’s a name I knew would market well.” He added: “A bunny is something so common that I thought to myself, every time someone sees one, they’ll remember my music.” In this account, the familiar image of a bunny was part of the name’s appeal, not just the source of the childhood anecdote.

The two accounts complement each other but come from different interviews. Telemundo’s report of the 2016 conversation highlights the idea of a distinctive character or brand; ET’s 2018 interview records his explanation of the childhood photo and the name’s marketing and memory value. Together, they show how he linked the name to an image and saw potential in it as a musical identity. They do not establish any separate origin for the photograph beyond what he recalled.
