AWS CloudFormation automates the provisioning and configuration of a live-streaming system; it does not ingest or encode video itself. In AWS’s reference architecture, MediaLive ingests and transcodes the video, MediaPackage packages it for playback, and CloudFront delivers it to viewers. CloudFormation deploys those services and their supporting resources as a coordinated stack.
What CloudFormation automates—and what it does not
CloudFormation describes AWS resources in a stack and creates or configures them together. For live streaming, that can include video services, delivery infrastructure, permissions, storage, monitoring and other supporting resources. The media services do the actual ingest, transcoding, packaging and delivery; CloudFormation makes their infrastructure repeatable and manageable as a deployment.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution is a reference implementation for practitioners with practical AWS and streaming experience. Its resources are created from AWS CDK constructs, and its template can be customized. See AWS’s solution overview and architecture overview.
How the MediaPackage reference workflow carries video to viewers
- Ingest and transcode with MediaLive. The documented design ingests two feeds for redundancy. MediaLive processes an ingest feed and creates adaptive-bitrate HLS output, so viewers can receive a rendition suited to their playback conditions.
- Package with MediaPackage. MediaPackage ingests MediaLive’s adaptive-bitrate output and packages it into HLS, DASH and CMAF formats. Custom endpoints expose the packaged streams for playback.
- Authorize requests to the origin. CloudFront uses MediaPackage endpoints as its origin and sends a CDN identifier in a custom HTTP header. The identifier is created during deployment and stored in Secrets Manager; MediaPackage uses it to authorize playback requests.
- Deliver through CloudFront. CloudFront distributes the stream to viewers. The reference solution also provisions a demo HTML player hosted in S3, with CloudFront restricting access to the player bucket.
This separates the jobs: MediaLive handles ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage handles packaging and origination, and CloudFront handles viewer delivery. The custom-header authorization mechanism is part of this documented design, not a universal requirement for every AWS streaming architecture.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the documented deployment provisions
AWS’s current deployment guide says the default stack deploys a Lambda function, a MediaLive input and channel, a MediaPackage channel, two CloudFront distributions and an S3 bucket for the preview player. The template is customizable, so treat that list as the guide’s default deployment rather than an unchangeable requirement. AWS gives an approximate deployment time of 20 minutes; this is an estimate for deploying the solution, not a guarantee for every account or configuration. See Deploy the solution.
Encoding profiles in the deployment guide
The guide documents progressive encoding profiles at 30 frames per second. These are configuration options, not performance guarantees or a claim that every source should use the highest profile.

Plan a deployment around your source, viewers and Region
Confirm the workflow before choosing a template
Map the video source and ingest needs first, including whether redundant feeds are required. Then decide which playback formats and player environments you need, how the origin should be protected, and how viewers will receive the stream. Those decisions affect the services and settings that belong in the stack; a reference solution is a starting point, not a substitute for matching the design to the production workload.
Check regional service availability
The solution launches in us-east-1 by default, but the operator must select a Region where the required media services are available. AWS specifically cautions that MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect are available only in specific Regions. Check AWS’s current regional service list before deploying; availability can vary by service and Region. Do not assume that the default Region or a template’s successful deployment proves every service is available where you need it.

Review security, operations and cost
- Understand how origin requests are authorized. In the MediaPackage reference, the CDN identifier is held in Secrets Manager and passed in CloudFront’s custom header.
- Review the permissions and supporting resources created by the template, and decide how you will monitor the workflow and respond to failures.
- Estimate operating costs for the services, data transfer, storage and expected usage in your chosen Region before production. The cited solution pages do not establish current prices, so use AWS’s current pricing information for a workload-specific estimate.
- Inspect the current template and its release details before deploying or customizing it. The deployment guide describes the solution, but a template’s exact contents may change over time.
Alternative: store HLS segments in S3
AWS also documents a CloudFormation-based design in which MediaLive’s encoded HLS segments are stored in S3 and CloudFront uses S3 as its origin. This changes the storage and origin stage rather than simply renaming the MediaPackage workflow. The design’s documented service set includes CloudWatch monitoring, IAM permissions, Systems Manager monitoring and cost visualization, and optional AWS Elemental Link hardware for an on-premises video source. Elemental Link is an optional path, not a prerequisite for explaining or deploying every S3-backed workflow.
| Decision area | MediaPackage-origin reference | S3-backed alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Origin stage | MediaPackage ingests adaptive-bitrate output and exposes custom endpoints. | MediaLive’s encoded HLS segments are stored in S3; CloudFront uses S3 as origin. |
| Documented delivery formats | HLS, DASH and CMAF. | The cited architecture describes HLS segments stored in S3. |
| Supporting components noted in the architecture | Secrets Manager stores the CDN identifier used for origin authorization; the solution also includes a preview player bucket. | CloudWatch, IAM and Systems Manager components are included; Elemental Link hardware is optional. |
| Best selection question | Does the workflow need MediaPackage’s documented packaging and custom endpoints? | Does an S3-backed segment-storage and origin design fit the workload? |
The architecture pages establish these structural differences, but do not provide a complete current comparison of playback latency, operating costs or Region coverage. Compare those for the actual workload rather than inferring them from the origin choice alone. Read AWS’s S3-backed architecture overview and architecture details.

Amazon IVS is a separate CloudFormation option
For managed interactive live video, CloudFormation provides native Amazon IVS resource types, including AWS::IVS::Channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey. Declaring a channel does not itself create a stream key: declare the separate stream-key resource when the stack must provision one. IVS is a distinct option, not another name for the MediaLive–MediaPackage reference pipeline. See AWS’s documentation for AWS::IVS::Channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is playing uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube live stream—not capturing a live camera feed—StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option than building an AWS video pipeline. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so no home computer, OBS setup or home connection needs to stay on.
