We Live in Time follows Almut and Tobias through a relationship shaped by both everyday intimacy and the limits of time. Rather than recounting their story in strict chronological order, director John Crowley’s film places moments of love, family, illness, joy and grief alongside one another, asking how a couple makes meaning from the time they have.

What is We Live in Time about?

In A24’s spoiler-light synopsis, a surprise encounter brings Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) together. Their connection grows into an unconventional love story as they learn to cherish their relationship while confronting the limits of time. John Crowley directed the film. A24’s film page frames the premise without reducing it to a single turning point.

How does the film tell a love story out of order?

The story does not move as a simple sequence from first meeting to final chapter. The Associated Press describes it as compressing and remixing a decade of Almut and Tobias’s relationship into a nonlinear narrative. Moments from different stages of their life appear in relation to one another, so the film’s shape reflects how a relationship can be remembered: not only as a timeline, but as a collection of scenes that take on meaning together. The AP interview with Garfield and Pugh describes that interwoven approach.

That structure lets tenderness and heartbreak sit close together. Birth, family life, illness and death are part of the story’s emotional range, rather than detours from its romance. The film’s central contrast is not simply happiness against sadness; it is the ordinary work of building a life together alongside the knowledge that time is limited.

What do Garfield and Pugh say about the performances?

In a Good Morning America interview, Garfield praised Pugh’s way of working with him as “so un-judgmental.” The comment offers a glimpse of how he described their collaboration and onscreen chemistry; it is his perspective, not a measure of how every viewer will respond.

The interviews also connect the actors’ experience of making the film with its difficult emotional material. The AP reported that both found the end of filming emotionally hard to process. Garfield described the experience to The Guardian as “very healing … It was like putting form to something that is so impossible to comprehend: a soul going through love and loss.” His description speaks to the process of inhabiting the story, not to a claim that the film is based on the actors’ real lives.

Why do love and loss belong in the same story?

We Live in Time treats love as more than the start of a romance. Partnership means sharing the uncertain parts of life as well as its joyful milestones. By placing intimacy, risk, illness, grief and joy within the same nonlinear portrait, the film considers how love is lived under pressure—and how a relationship can matter even when it cannot make time stand still.
