Anamika’s poetry challenges patriarchy by bringing women’s lived experience, speech, work, and claims to rights into literary focus. In an interview about her award-winning collection, she described women from rural, marginalized-caste, Adivasi, and economically deprived communities speaking from their own lives—and framed their struggle as a nonviolent demand for rights and a more egalitarian society.
Which book brought Anamika the 2020 award?
The Sahitya Akademi’s official Hindi awards listing records Anamika as the 2020 recipient in poetry for Tokri Mein Digant ‘Their Gatha’ : 2014. The Outlook Hindi interview gives the Devanagari title as टोकरी में दिगंतः थेरीगाथा 2014; transliterations differ, so the Akademi’s listing is the clearest English reference. How does the collection challenge patriarchal power?
It gives women across social locations space to speak
In a 19 March 2021 interview with Harimohan Mishra, Anamika described the collection as giving expression to women from rural communities, marginalized castes, Adivasi communities, and economically deprived areas. She said their conversations open up different layers of the world. The challenge to patriarchy begins here: women are not presented only as subjects of someone else’s account, but as people who interpret and articulate the social realities around them. It treats everyday speech and work as places where knowledge is made
Anamika connected women’s expression to ordinary collective practices: singing while cooking, grinding grain, working in fields, and traveling. She argued that such settings have long carried women’s accounts of social life and gender relations. This perspective broadens what counts as meaningful expression: the knowledge embedded in shared work and conversation belongs in the cultural record, not outside it. She also connected women’s voices to literary traditions such as devotional poetry and said women writers’ contributions have not always received adequate discussion. It frames resistance as a claim to rights and equality
In the interview, Anamika described women as arguing for their rights while retaining love for those they confront. She presented that struggle as a contribution toward an egalitarian society and characterized its approach as nonviolent. Her account links resistance to changing unequal arrangements, rather than to hatred of individuals. What does Anamika say about feminism?
She expressed her view in a concise Hindi statement: “स्त्रीवाद हमेशा सौम्यता, उदारता का हामी है।” A translation for context is: “Feminism is always a supporter of gentleness and generosity.” The wording reflects her stated emphasis on gentleness and generosity alongside women’s demands for rights; it should be read as her position in this interview, not as a universal account of feminism. Anamika’s author website describes her as a Hindi poet, social worker, and novelist, as well as a critic writing in English. It also says that listening to women’s stories and pain shaped her understanding of women and her questioning of socially constructed femininity.
