La Malinche—known in Nahuatl as Malintzin and in Spanish accounts as Doña Marina—was an Indigenous woman who had been enslaved before she became Hernán Cortés’s interpreter. Her knowledge of Nahuatl and Mayan, followed by her acquisition of Spanish, helped the Spanish expedition communicate and negotiate with Indigenous communities. She was a consequential intermediary, not the sole cause of the Mexica capital’s fall.
Who was La Malinche?
Malintzin was among the Indigenous women transferred to the Spanish after Cortés’s arrival in Tabasco in 1519. The American Historical Association (AHA) says she had learned Mayan while enslaved. Her language skills later placed her at the center of communication between Cortés’s expedition and Indigenous interlocutors.
Her names reflect different language traditions rather than a single, uncontested name. Spanish accounts call her Doña Marina; Nahuatl speakers called her Malintzin; La Malinche is a familiar form widely used today. The AHA notes that translation and pronunciation complicate the names’ history, and that some accounts also use “Malinche” for Cortés. Calling her simply “Malinche” should not be taken as proof that it was her birth name. AHA, “Who Was Malinche?”
How did she interpret for Cortés?
At first, communication worked through two interpreters. Jerónimo de Aguilar knew Mayan, while Malintzin spoke Nahuatl and Mayan. The AHA says she had learned Mayan while enslaved; she later learned Spanish and became Cortés’s chief interpreter. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) likewise describes her initially interpreting alongside Aguilar and later interpreting on her own. This linguistic bridge allowed the expedition to take part in conversations and negotiations across language communities. Interpretation could help transmit information and support political maneuvering, but the available accounts do not provide a reliable event-by-event record of how particular translations changed particular outcomes. Claims that she secretly planned the conquest or single-handedly directed it go beyond what these sources establish.
How did her role relate to the fall of the Mexica capital?
The Mexica—often called the Aztecs in popular writing—controlled Tenochtitlan when the Spanish arrived. Malintzin’s work helped Cortés communicate during a campaign that ended with the destruction of Tenochtitlan in 1521 and the establishment of a Spanish capital, Mexico City, in its place. Her interpreting mattered because communication gave the expedition access to exchanges with Indigenous interlocutors. But it does not explain the conquest by itself. The evidence supports describing her as an important intermediary within a wider campaign, not as the person who alone toppled the Mexica state. The conquest’s broader political and military causes cannot be reduced to one interpreter’s actions.
What can historical accounts tell us about her?
No single surviving account offers a transparent record of Malintzin’s private thoughts. The sources come from different authors, communities, moments, languages and genres; they are valuable, but each has limits.

- Cortés’s letters: written to the Spanish crown during the campaign. They document how Cortés presented events to his intended audience, not a neutral account of every exchange.
- Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s account: a retrospective narrative written decades after the 1521 victory. Díaz credited Doña Marina with making communication possible; the NEH quotes him saying, “without Doña Marina, we could not have understood the language of New Spain and Mexico.” NEH, “Who Was Malinche?”
- The Florentine Codex: a major Mexica/Nahua narrative tradition preserved in parallel Nahuatl and Spanish versions. Its language and translation history matter when interpreting what it says.
- The Lienzo de Tlaxcala: an Indigenous-authored visual history that offers a perspective on Tlaxcalteca participation in the conquest.

“Traitor” turns a complicated, coercive history into a simple moral verdict. Malintzin had been enslaved before she served the Spanish, and her linguistic skills gave her influence in communications with Cortés and Indigenous leaders. Those facts do not establish how freely she could act in each encounter, what she privately intended, or whether she understood every consequence of her role.

Later generations have made her a symbol and reassessed inherited judgments about her. The NEH account describes modern efforts to reconsider that reputation. Historian Camilla Townsend, quoted by the Associated Press in a contemporary report, said, “She saved her own life really by choosing to translate.” That is Townsend’s interpretation, not proof of Malintzin’s private motives in every situation. NEH, “Who Was Malinche?”
The careful conclusion is narrower: Malintzin was an enslaved Indigenous woman whose unusual command of languages made her a crucial interpreter for Cortés. Her work helped the expedition communicate, but the record cannot settle all questions about her agency or motives, and it does not make her solely responsible for the conquest.
